Excerpt from Geological Survey of Alabama: Circular No; 1 Documents Showing the Nature of the Work Done by the U. S. Geological Survey in the States L/ajor Powell: I do not attempt to go into the States 'where beds of phosphates are; I. Do not go into 'the States and say on what particular land iron is to be found, or on what Oman's land coal is to be found, or any other mineral; I do make a topographic survey, and upon that place the geologic forma tions, and then' discuss the relations of the iron, and c0pper, and zinc, and phosphates, etc., to those particular geologic' formations. At that point the State Surveys come in and fix the values, methods of development and other questions, of the several articles, by their own organizations. Upon 'that' 1 plan the States are reorganizing their surveys. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Geological Survey of Alabama: Report of Progress for 1874 Sir - The Report of Progress of the Geological Survey for the year 1874 is herewith respectfully submitted. I have withheld the report until thus late in the session of the General Assembly in order that a number of chemical analyses, by which its value would be increased, might be made and presented with it. Excerpt from First Biennial Report on the Geology of Alabama Geological Map. - Of the map accompanying the report, I can only say, that although as accurate as the materials col lected, and the extent of my observations would allow, yet it is by no means offered as a complete geological map of the State, for that would imply that the study of the geology itself was completed. It presents at a glance, a general view of the ge ological structure of Alabama, shows the relative position and extent of the great groups of rocks, laid down, it is true, with some approach to correctness, but it claims no more. To con struct a geological map with absolute accuracy, is a werk in volving much time, and is rarely attempted excepting in cases where a corps of assistants can be employed. Such are the maps of the Ordnance Survey of Great Britain, where every formation is accurately laid down from actual measurement, and sections constructed with similar care.
