Excerpt from Report on Drainage Investigations, 1903 The best practical methods of applying the necessary quantity of water to soils which are'deficient in moisture, and of draining them when the supply of water from any source becomes too great, are of vital interest to every cultivator. The object of the drainage work which the Office of Experiment Stations has undertaken in connection with its irrigation investigation is to study these methods and their efficiency under various conditions, to examine lands needing drainage, and to give advice as to their reclamation. Such aid has been given where the work involved was fairly representative of a general class of conditions afiecti11g the reclamation and development of land. What has been done along this line during the past year is herein out lined, with the deductions and results briefly discussed. Actual field and local conditions have been dealt with direct. Business, engineer ing, and practical phases of various problems have been considered and will continue to receive marked attention in future investigations. Excerpt from Report of the State Board of Geological Survey of Michigan for the Year 1903 The whole country is underlain by clay, but this is generally far from the surface, sometimes 100 feet or more. Some of the depressions have clay surface soil. They were probably under cover of the ice sheet at the time of formation of the neighboring moraines and sand plains, or were the bottoms of glacial lakes. The lowest portions of the depressions, whether these have sand or clay as surface soil, are almost always occupied by swamps or lakes. Through the swamps the very lowest part is often marked by a meandering stream channel, the line of drainage for all the region which lies between the neighboring ridges. Excerpt from Report of Progress of Stream Measurements for the Calendar Year 1903, Vol. 4: Interior Basin, Pacific, and Hudson Bay Drainage From the rating table and daily gage heights a table giving the daily discharge of the streams is prepared. From this the table of esti mated monthly and yearly discharges and run-off is computed. This latter table gives in condensed form'a summary of the results obtained from the Observations made during the year at the station. In order to explain this table the following definitions are given. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Report of Progress of Steam Measurements for the Calendar Year 1903, Vol. 1: Northern Atlantic, St. Lawrence River, and Great Lakes Drainage During 1903 the number of regular stations for stream measure ments was steadily increased, so that at the close of the year system atic measurements were being carried on at approximately 500 stations. These are distributed so as to best cover the needs of the various States and Territories. (see Pl. I for location of principal gaging stations.) This expansion of the work is the result of the constantly increasing demand from the general and engineering public for the stream data collected by the Survey. The requests for information have been so numerous that the supply of publications containing the results has in many cases become exhausted. The Survey has continued to receive the hearty cooperation of vari ous individuals, corporations, and States, as mentioned hereafter. This cooperation has made possible the publication of many valuable records which could not otherwise have been obtained.
