Prompted by this sug gestion, he ventured upon the task, believing that it was a duty he owed his fellow-citizens to lay before them the results of his observation and experience during a period which embraced the most distinguished actors on the public stage, and the most stirring events which have occurred since the State passed from its Terri torial condition.
