Preached on board ship at Smyrna, 1843. "Leaving us an example."--1 Pet. ii. 21. "when it is considered who Christ was, when it is considered from whence He came and what He came to do, it must certainly be confessed that few or none of us pay Him that attention which He deserves. For that can be said of Christ that can be said of no other person that ever lived. Compare the lives of other men with the life of Christ, and they all sink into insignificance; whether we consider the wonderful events that adorn His history or the consequences which followed them. It may be said, indeed it may be proved, that the present civilised state of mankind is owing to what He did; but although that is a great deal to say, and can be said of no other person, yet it is but little in comparison with what we might say of Him. The greatest and happiest consequences of our Lord's labours are not to be sought in this life, but in the next. He came certainly to improve our condition upon earth, but His great object was to warn us against losing heaven. So that during all the time that He laboured, while He was healing diseases, relieving hunger and distress, and setting us an example to do the same, He continually returned to the great question--' What shall it profit a man, though he gain the whole world, if he lose his own soul?' This was the prevailing feeling that ran through all His discourses, all His parables, and that actuated and impelled His very actions.
