Raaga and her Akka is a book dedicated to my beautiful kids who nurtured me into a responsible, patient, unbreakable, multitasking and fearless mother. This book is a hybrid of experiences and observations on the bond between siblings and how it bounces between love and fights. It's a story of two sisters who are learning from each other by merely observing the other. The stories are spread across various scenarios highlighting the varied emotions of the first and secondborns in the family. This book will help the firstborns to calm their insecurities of being neglected and help them accept the new member of the family. Also, when the secondborns grow up, it will take them down a nostalgic memory lane. This book is also for parents to remind them that they are not alone in this game.

Kannan is on a poignant journey back in time through the narrow lanes of life he has walked through seven decades. The journey, though not sequential traverses through the necessary stops which had its soft corners and milestones. As he journeys through time and memories, Kannan revisits moments from his childhood to his grandson’s birth as he reflects on the instances when either love or fate embraced him, sending him in a new direction. In recollections that include precious time spent with his beloved son, sister, and many others, Kannan’s heart blooms with happiness as his life comes full circle and he realizes the power behind a simple hug. All You Need is a Hug is a collection of excerpts from one man’s experiences as he travels back into his past and invites his memories to wash over him and reveal the true meaning of love and life.

'[Vinaya Chaitanya shows] an acute awareness of textual issues that never bothered earlier translators.' - From the foreword by H.S. Shivaprakash Hailed as an early feminist literary voice, Akka Mahadevi was born in twelfth-century Karnataka. As a child she was initiated into the worship of Channamallikarjuna, her village's version of Siva. She was forced to marry her region's ruler, but because she had become so ardently devoted to the god, Akka abandoned her husband and all her possessions and wandered alone - a naked poet-saint covered only by her long hair. Her vacanas, a new populist literary form meaning literally 'to give one's word' - demonstrate both her radical devotion to Siva and the commitment to equality her Virasaiva poetry embodied.

Shenkottai Sri Avudai Akkal, a remarkable eighteenth-century woman saint from Tamil Nadu, was a self-realised advaitin who sang passionately about the ecstasy of spiritual union with the Absolute. A desolate and stigmatised Brahmin child-widow, she was initiated into Vedanta by the great master Tiruvisainallur Shridhara Venkatesa Ayyawal. Her songs, a radical elision of the metaphysical sublime and personal devotion, are narrated through existential tropes sourced from daily life, and also offer a powerful critique of the oppressive orthodox socio-religious practices of that period. Composed in simple, colloquial Tamil, and bringing hope and solace to women in general and widows in particular for almost three centuries, these songs by Avudai Akkal were preserved within the oral tradition by Brahmin women of Tirunellveli district who sang them on all occasions. The songs were documented in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and have appeared in many Tamil publications. They appear in English translation for the first time in this book. Each song is accompanied by annotations and themed essays. Published by Zubaan.
