The purpose of the Berkeley Workshop on Monoids was to give expository talks by the most qualified experts in the emerging main areas of monoid and semigroup theory including applications to theoretical computer science. This was supplemented with current research papers. The topics covered, in an accessible way for the mathematical and theoretical computer community, were: Kernels and expansions in semigroup theory; Implicit operations; Inverse monoids; Varieties of semigroups and universal algebra; Linear semigroups and monoids of Lie type; Monoids acting on tress; Synthesis theorem, regular semigroups, and applications; Type-II conjecture; Application to theoretical computer science and decision problems.

The thematic term on OC Semigroups, Algorithms, Automata and LanguagesOCO organized at the International Centre of Mathematics (Coimbra, Portugal) in MayOCoJuly 2001 was the gathering point for researchers working in the field of semigroups, algorithms, automata and languages. These areas were selected considering their huge recent developments, their potential applications, and the motivation from other fields of mathematics and computer science. This proceedings volume is a unique collection of advanced courses and original contributions on semigroups and their connections with logic, automata, languages, group theory, discrete dynamics, topology and complexity. A selection of open problems discussed during the thematic term is also included. Contents: Finite Semigroups: An Introduction to a Unified Theory of Pseudovarieties (J Almeida); On Existence Varieties of Regular Semigroups (K Auinger); Varieties of Languages (M J J Branco); A Short Introduction to Automatic Group Theory (C Choffrut); Some Results on Semigroup-Graded Rings (W D Munn); Profinite Groups and Applications to Finite Semigroups (L Ribes); Dynamics of Finite Semigroups (J Almeida); Finite Semigroups Imposing Tractable Constraints (A Bulatov et al.); On the Efficiency and Deficiency of Rees Matrix Semigroups (C M Campbell et al.); Some Pseudovariety Joins Involving Groups and Locally Trivial Semigroups (J C Costa); Partial Action of Groups on Relational Structures: A Connection Between Model Theory and Profinite Topology (T Coulbois); Some Relatives of Automatic and Hyperbolic Groups (M Hoffmann et al.); A Sampler of a Topological Approach to Inverse Semigroups (B Steinberg); Finite Semigroups and the Logical Description of Regular Languages (H Straubing); Diamonds are Forever: The Variety DA (P Tesson & D Th(r)rien); Decidability Problems in Finite Semigroups (P G Trotter); and other papers. There is algebraic structure in time, computation and biological systems. Algebraic engineering exploits this structure to achieve better understanding and design. In this book, pure and applied results in semigroups, language theory and algebra are applied to areas ranging from circuit design to software engineering to biological evolution.

This volume is an outcome of the International Conference on Algebra in celebration of the 70th birthday of Professor Shum Kar-Ping which was held in Gadjah Mada University on 7?10 October 2010. As a consequence of the wide coverage of his research interest and work, it presents 54 research papers, all original and referred, describing the latest research and development, and addressing a variety of issues and methods in semigroups, groups, rings and modules, lattices and Hopf Algebra. The book also provides five well-written expository survey articles which feature the structure of finite groups by A Ballester-Bolinches, R Esteban-Romero, and Yangming Li; new results of Gr”bner-Shirshov basis by L A Bokut, Yuqun Chen, and K P Shum; polygroups and their properties by B Davvaz; main results on abstract characterizations of algebras of n-place functions obtained in the last 40 years by Wieslaw A Dudek and Valentin S Trokhimenko; Inverse semigroups and their generalizations by X M Ren and K P Shum. Recent work on cones of metrics and combinatorics done by M M Deza et al. is included.

The theory of semigroups is a relatively young branch of mathematics, with most of the major results having appeared after the Second World War. This book describes the evolution of (algebraic) semigroup theory from its earliest origins to the establishment of a full-fledged theory. Semigroup theory might be termed `Cold War mathematics' because of the time during which it developed. There were thriving schools on both sides of the Iron Curtain, although the two sides were not always able to communicate with each other, or even gain access to the other's publications. A major theme of this book is the comparison of the approaches to the subject of mathematicians in East and West, and the study of the extent to which contact between the two sides was possible.

Every four years, leading researchers gather to survey the latest developments in all aspects of group theory. Since 1981, the proceedings of those meetings have provided a regular snapshot of the state of the art in group theory and helped to shape the direction of research in the field. This volume contains selected papers from the 2013 meeting held in St Andrews. It begins with major articles from each of the four main speakers: Emmanuel Breuillard (Paris-Sud), Martin Liebeck (Imperial College London), Alan Reid (Texas) and Karen Vogtmann (Cornell). These are followed by, in alphabetical order, survey articles contributed by other conference participants, which cover a wide spectrum of modern group theory.

The research results published in this set of proceedings range from pure semigroup theory to theoretical computer science, in particular formal languages and automata. Contributed by internationally recognized researchers, the papers address issues in the algebraic and combinatorial theories of semigroups, the structure theory of automata, the classification theory of formal languages and codes and applications of these theories to various areas like circuit testing, coding theory, or cryptography. The underlying theme is the semigroup and automaton theories and their role in certain applications.
