Fatigue failure of structures used in transportation, industry, medical equipment, and electronic components needs to build a link between cutting-edge experimental characterization and probabilistically grounded numerical and artificially intelligent tools. The physics involved in this process chain is computationally prohibitive to comprehend using traditional computation methods. Using machine learning and Bayesian statistics, a defect-correlated estimate of fatigue strength was developed. Fatigue, which is a random variable, is studied in a Bayesian-based machine learning algorithm. The stress-life model was used based on the compatibility condition of life and load distributions. The defect-correlated assessment of fatigue strength was established using the proposed machine learning and Bayesian statistics algorithms. It enabled the mapping of structural and process-induced fatigue characteristics into a geometry-independent load density chart across a wide range of fatigue regimes.

This book presents selected contributions from ICMFM XX and the Polish National Conference—KKMP. The XX International Colloquium on Mechanical Fatigue of Metals (ICMFM XX) was organized on 15–17 September 2021, in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Wroclaw University of Science and Technology, in Wrocław City, Poland, in a remote form. Its aim was to facilitate and encourage the exchange of knowledge and experiences among the different communities involved in both basic and applied research in the field of fatigue of metals, looking at the problem of fatigue from a multiscale perspective, and exploring analytical and numerical simulative approaches, without losing the perspectives of the application. The Polish National Conference—KKMP 2021—was organized remotely with 50–80 prominent international participants from the fracture mechanics community.

The papers published in these peer-reviewed proceedings represent the latest developments in nondestructive characterization of materials and were presented at the Tenth International Symposium on Nondestructive Characterization of Materials held on June 26 - 30, 2000 in Karuizawa, Japan. The symposium was held concurrently with three other symposia and one workshop. This symposium is the tenth in the series that began in 1983 and became an international meeting in 1986.The symposium started with a Plenary Lecture entitled 'Application of Non-contact Ultrasonics to Nondestrctive Characterization of Materials' by Professor R.E. Green, Jr. Various characterization methods were presented at the symposium, including ultrasonics, X-ray, eddy currents, laser, thermal wave, acoustic emission, optical fibers, optics, magnetics and ultrasonic microscope. Thin films and coatings as well as smart materials were also emphasized in this symposium.
