This is a general overview of POD Version 3 usage with emphasis on the input sheets for a POD analysis. The manual also contains the explanations of the output tables and graphs. The input and output sheets are standard Excel workbook sheets. All standard Excel 97 commands can be used at the discretion of the user. Knowledge of Excel is assumed and no Excel commands are discussed. It is a C++ program that interacts with a Microsoft Excel 97 workbook to perform POD analysis on the results of an NDE capability demonstration. The interface between the user and POD is the Excel Workbook. POD controls the analysis through a window that opens and closes workbooks, calls for the recalculations using the analysis and data specified on the input sheets of the workbook, and executes Excel macros that produce the output of the analysis. POD names, uses, and controls a maximum of 11 sheets of the workbook. Two of these sheets contain the input information for an analysis and the other nine contain analysis output in the form of tables and graphs.

This is the third volume of a technical report prepared by the University of Dayton Research Institute for the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate (ML) of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. The final report of this work comprises three volumes. Volume 1 presents a description of changes made to the probability of detection (POD) analysis program of Mil-STD-1823 and the statistical evaluation of modifications that were made to version 3 of the Eddy Current Inspection System (ECIS v3). Volume 2 contains the Users Manual for the version 3 update of the POD program. The results of a separate study for predicting POD from specimens of like geometry and materials are presented in Volume 3. In the current environment of restricted budgets, aircraft components are often used beyond their design life. In order to avoid the large cost of replacing critical rotating parts as they reach their "safe-life" limits, a Retirement For Cause (RCF) program was implemented. The RFC program involves periodic nondestructive evaluation (NDF) inspections to assess the damage-state of components. Components with no detectable cracks are returned to service and those with detected cracks are discarded before they can cause an incident. This process allows parts with high life to be used to their full potential. The Air Force has embraced RFC and currently uses it to successfully manage component life for several of their gas turbine engines.

In 1995, the U.S. Air Force initiated a multifaceted program to upgrade the ECIS. Planned changes to the ECIS include updating a) the eddy current instrument, b) the station computer and its operating system, and c) the robotics controller. These system changes were to be "drop-in" to avoid the costs of repeating a complete capability demonstration program for ongoing engine inspections. In addition, a new approach to calibration was demonstrated, and a new POD computer program was written for the analysis of data from capability demonstrations. This report presents the results of the study whose objectives were updating the POD analysis program and evaluating the data collected to demonstrate the drop-in compatibility of the upgraded and original ECISs. An additional task was later added to analyze data from an experiment designed to validate two proposed methods for inferring the POD of a geometry material combination using inspection results from other geometry/material combinations. While the primary focus of this study was POD analysis for the kFC/ENSIP application with its highly automated ECIS, the POD analysis methods are applicable to a broad range of nondestructive evaluation (NDE) systems. Accordingly, the report discusses POD analyses in this broader context.

The emergence of civil aviation as a means of mass transportation is primarily due to the large scale construction of jet airplanes in the past 30 years or so. A large number of these jet airplanes is currently operating at or beyond their designed fatigue lives. Thus, the structural integrity of these aging airplanes has become an issue of major concern to all nations of the world. To bring the needed technical and research focus on the issues involved in the life-enhancement and safety-assurance of aging airplanes, the Federal Aviation Administration sponsored a symposium in Atlanta, GA, USA, during 20-22 March 1990. This symposium, under the title "International Symposium on Structural Integrity of Aging Airplanes· was organized jointly be the Georgia Institute of Technology (Center for Computational Mechanics) and the Transportation Systems Center (Cambridge, MA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Industrial and academic experts from several countries in North America, Europe and Asia, were invited to discuss their experiences and proposed solutions. This monograph contains the original papers that represent the expanded and edited versions of the talks presented at this symposium. This book aims to bring the collective experience, from across the world, with problems related to the structural integrity of aging airplanes to the attention of the professional and research community at large - in the hope that it may stimulate further fruitful research on this important topic of global concern.

This book serves as a comprehensive resource on various traditional, advanced and futuristic material technologies for aerospace applications encompassing nearly 20 major areas. Each of the chapters addresses scientific principles behind processing and production, production details, equipment and facilities for industrial production, and finally aerospace application areas of these material technologies. The chapters are authored by pioneers of industrial aerospace material technologies. This book has a well-planned layout in 4 parts. The first part deals with primary metal and material processing, including nano manufacturing. The second part deals with materials characterization and testing methodologies and technologies. The third part addresses structural design. Finally, several advanced material technologies are covered in the fourth part. Some key advanced topics such as “Structural Design by ASIP”, “Damage Mechanics-Based Life Prediction and Extension” and “Principles of Structural Health Monitoring” are dealt with at equal length as the traditional aerospace materials technology topics. This book will be useful to students, researchers and professionals working in the domain of aerospace materials.
