Research has shown that the academic achievement gap between urban middle school students and students in suburban schools and elsewhere still exists. This is largely in part due to continuous disruptive behaviors in the classroom that take the focus, time, and energy of the teacher away from student engagement and learning and instead places it on the disruptive behavior.
