Excerpt from Practical Method Of Teaching The French Language By the method of translation, used in nearly all tue schools, it has been only too well proved that, after two or three years of study, an American is scarcely capable of translating from French into English, or from English into very bad French; and is utterly incapable of sustaining any conversation whatever with a Frenchman. Excerpt from "Our Method" For Teaching Practical French We have reversed the traditional order of methods by giving the example before the rule - the Synthesis before the Analysis the whole before the part. The Whys, Whats and Where fores could never exist without the sug gestion which the object in its completion can alone inspire. Grammar should not be forced upon the mind, but granted as an answer to the intelligent, awakened and inquiring curios ity of the pupil. Excerpt from A New Method of Learning the French Language In Parts Second and Fourth, the practical predominates; in Parts Third and Fifth, the theoretical. They are so far independent of each other, that the several parts need not be studied in the order in which they stand. The arrangement, however, was suggested by a long course of experience, and adopted after mature delibera tion. The practical develops principles, elements, and facts, in natural succession, but without regard to scientific method; the theoretical embraces, in a connected view, and in systematic order, the cognate parts that have been studied separately. By this plan, the treatment of the verbs is presented to the mind, unembarrassed with other dimculties; the student, once familiar with their forms, may enter upon a course of reading-lessons, which adds variety to the exercises, and increases his interest in the study of the language. Excerpt from Ahn's Practical and Easy Method of Learning the French Language: Second Course A special and distinctive feature are the numerous and copious Exercises on the Irregular Verbs. Each of these, with only a tew exceptions, is taken up separately, and in order to confine the learner's attention to the one point in hand, the exercises are based upon a comprehensive, clear, and practical paradigm of the respective verb. The new words to be used are placed at the head of each exercise. In their selection, regard has been bad to the fact that it is better to learn a few things thoroughly than many superficially. For recalling a word which is entirely or partially forgotten, the Vocabularies should be consulted. These contain all words occurring in the book, with their meanings, but only as used in the Exercises. The style of the latter is mainly colloquial, so as to enable the pupil to surmount the primary difficulties of French con versation, and in order to impart greater fluency, a series of Conversations is add ed. Excerpt from Practical French Course in Fifty Lessons: An Entirely New Method Originally written for those students who wish to master French rapidly, either for pleasure, or business, the present grammar is now used with great success in colleges and schools, also by the best private teachers, here and abroad. The ever-increasing popularity of this book, which has already reached the third edition, is the most convincing proof of its practical value. In the two preliminary lessons of this grammar the pupil is taught: First, how to pronounce, read and write French; second, how to distinguish, by a very simple rule, the gender of French nouns, and to form the plural of the same; third, how to acquire an extensive French vocabulary by mere observation. In the subsequent practical lessons the student is led, gradually and logically, through the intricacies of the lan guage, from those conventional phrases in current daily use, to the fluent form of conversation and the mastery of idiomatic French. Excerpt from Hossfeld's New Practical Method for Learning the French Language It is by the careful translation of this Exercise, as well as by the reading and learning by heart of the Conversations and the Dialogues, that the student will become acquainted with the idioms of the French Language. Lists of such idioms are dry and very soon forgotten by the pupil but when framed in useful conversations or pleasant anecdotes, they make a stronger im pression on the mind and remain fixed in the memory. We specially recommend to masters the use of the Keys, printed on single leaves of strong paper - one lesson on each leaf. One of these leaves is to be given to each pupil after the exercises have been worked out, so that he may himself see and correct the mistakes (if any) he has made. This having been done, the corrected exercises and the Key should be returned to the master for revision. The correction by the pupil himself has been proved to be one of the most successful features of this method it obliges the pupil to go a second time over his work, and by this means the mistakes he has made are vividly brought before him. As a result, the same mistakes are less likely to recur, and the masters will be spared a long, tedious, and relatively fruitless work.
