This collection makes available the most important collection of Thomas Gray's manuscripts and books in the world. The highlight of the collection is his 'Commonplace Book', which was started by Gray in about 1736 when he was an undergraduate at Cambridge with Horace Walpole. It includes notes and essays under all manner of headings, poems written by Gray and copies of verse that he admired, lists of books owned and read, and indexes. It was continued for the whole period of his literary career. Amongst many other things, the collection also includes his two diaries which feature observations on natural catastrophes, his own health and the progress of flora. This material allows for a thorough examination of Gray's development as a poet and prose writer and enables us to understand his many influences.
