ORIGINAL POEMS and Proverbs by Wayside (William McFarland), as well as some quotations NEVER before published into a book along with SCANNED IMAGES (photos) of the original handwriting by Wayside from the late 1800s. A part of American history from the 19th Century here we have some 19th Century Poetry. This American poetry collection of American literature can tell us more about the era of the time they were written. If you want to find out what an event was like, one can read the poems which have been written about it.These Wayside poems are over 123 years old. All these American poems were written prior to 1887. They are of general themes as well as poems about American communities, family and friends. The poems and quotations inside this paperback, printed book were originally written over 123 years ago by a Union Officer in the Civil War whose real name was William McFarland. Wayside was his pen name. This is why the author's name is Wayside. Wayside's poems were kept in his handwritten notebook for over 123 years and passed down from one generation to another. These American poems were written by my Civil War Ancestor in the 19th Century. These WAYSIDE POEMS, Proverbs and Quotations were written sometime in the late 1800s although the exact years are unknown. William McFarland died suddenly in 1887 and so all of the poetry in this poetry collection was written prior to that year. William McFarland was my great, great, great grandfather. He was a writer and a school teacher. It was the dream of this Union Officer in the United States Civil War to have his poetry collection printed into a book but he did not live long enough to accomplish this task and so I am doing just that.I only wish William McFarland and my family could know that his POETRY is being published and printed into a book. This is Book Two of Four of "Poetry By Wayside" authored by Wayside.Anyone that enjoys old handwriting would probably really value the images of his beautiful, elegant old handwriting inside this book. By viewing the scanned images pages one can see the torn edges on some of the pages of the original manuscript. Anyone that collects anything old from the 19th Century would probably appreciate its value. Those that are interested in genealogy and family history may really enjoy reading this poetry book. Anyone that enjoys the 1800s, history or the Civil War period may be fascinated to read these poems thinking they were written in the late 1800s by a poet of the Civil War. The poems in this book along with their scanned images are thus a part of American history. The titles of the poetry in this book are:CarrieCarrie LodemaFour Little BellesFour O'ClockHard TimesHard To PleaseHe Hated A LiarHe Swallowed CrowHow I Became A TeetotallerIreneI Told You SoJeemsJudge NotKansasMy Native LandMy Old FriendMy Old Hoosier HomeNeponsetNeponset's Grand BazaarPeerless TwainSchool OutThe PicknickersThe Star of BethlehemQuotations include:The River Without A BridgeThe EditorA Toast Our County NewspapersProverbsThese Wayside poems are like an eye witness of how life was back then from one who actually was there and lived it. Excerpt from Songs of the Wayside MY apology for thrusting this volume upon the library shelves is the importunity of my friends, mainly, who have wished me to put into some permanent form the fugitives of forty years; but there is also an element of myself in the matter, for I have a conscience in this thing also. Ours is yet a young country. When the men of the pioneer days built their log huts they were preparing the way for massive buildings of steel and concrete. The huts may vanish, but the builders live on in the life of the country. So every fragment of a literary sort is a helper in creating a worthy, sub stantial and national literature. Some poems are of American patriotism and some are about the Civil War, the blues and the greys.Wayside, whose real name was William McFarland, was one of my Civil War ancestors. He was a POET of the NORTH. He wrote so many poems that we had to put them in several printed, paperback books. William McFarland lived from 1823 to 1887 in the USA. William McFarland was in the KANSAS UNION ARMY, Co. K, 13th Voluntary Regiment as a Sergeant for the Civil War. He fought for the NORTH. These poems are over 100 years old!!All these poems were written prior to 1887 but none of these were published or printed into a book and thus these are all ORIGINAL POEMS that are over 123 years old!!William McFarland was also a school teacher in Indiana, Kansas and Illinois. William McFarland also lived on a farm as his parents owned a farm. His poems are inspirational in nature and give us great hope. The reader can see for themselves the condition of the old paper and the actual original handwriting. This writer had such elegant and beautiful handwriting and he wrote using a QUILL PEN. How often can this be found now? How many poems can you find like this written in 1800s which have not yet been published in a printed book? These poems are NOT reproductions of ANY poem previously published by Wayside's family in a printed and published book. The poetry was handed down from one generation to another and kept safe and protected. It was the dream of Wayside to have his works published into a book. However, Wayside never lived long enough to accomplish this task and so it has been a goal of mine to do this for him. I only wish that my ancestor would know that I was able to do this for him. Inside the book we have some images which were taken directly from the original handwriting of Wayside where these poems were written. What you see are actual original poems that were never before published along with many scanned images from the very same originals.
