Excerpt from Physical Laboratory Manual This manual has been adapted particularly to the present equipment and requirements of a course in experimental physics in Harvard College known as Physics C. This course is accompanied by a series of illustrated lectures to the class as a whole, two each Week, and one hour each week of recitation and problem work to the class in small sections. A knowledge of algebra and plane geometry, and a slight acquaintance with the notation of trigonometry are necessary. Familiarity with the use of logarithms or the slide rule is strongly recommended for reducing the labor of computation. The course should properly be preceded by a more elementary course in physics. Small type has been used for a few descriptive and explanatory sections of the text which are not immediate parts of the specific directions of the experiments. The small type does not, however, signify relative unimportance of the material. Introductory remarks setting forth the application of the principles involved precede each experiment or each group of experiments involving the same principles. In writing this manual, some material, for which much indebtedness is expressed, has been freely taken from Professor Sabine's Laboratory Course in Physical Measurements. For two reasons a revision of this book has become necessary. The distribution of time in Physics C has been so altered that the laboratory work now occupies a shorter time than formerly, and the exercises have therefore become unduly long. It is also desirable to include a wider variety of experiments in the manual, so as to fit the somewhat different needs of the various classes of students who use it. In the course of the revision many experiments have been altered, where experience has shown this to be advantageous, or on account of changes in the apparatus. Excerpt from New Laboratory Manual of Physics Thls point of view concerning the function of experimental work in elementary physics is maintained throughout the Manual, particularly in the statement of the purpose of each experiment and in the questions asked in the discussions. Consistently with the View that the laboratory course is not a sufficient basis from which to evolve physics as a science, it is assumed in the discussion of experimental results that the pupil has at least carefully read his text-book on the subject of the experiment, and is therefore in _a position not only to state the conclusions which are supported by his work, but also to pass judgment on the quality of it by comparing his results with those known to be correct. Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Physics The reason for adding this book to the large number 'of laboratory manuals is that those now in use either contain too much matter to be successfully covered by a pupil in one year, or elaborate the principles chosen without regard to economy in time. In a large number of schools physics occurs in the course for but one year, and is given four or, at most, five periods per week. If of these five periods two are given to individual laboratory work, not more than fifty experiments can be performed, and these must be made so comprehensive as to afford a broad basis for class teaching. Excerpt from Physical Laboratory Manual: For Secondary Schools and Colleges This manual is the outgrowth of several years of experience with pupils in the physical laboratory as well as of a study of the growth and development of laboratory work in secondary schools. The development of the work in my own hands has been attended with an elimination of qualitative exercises, or illustrative experiments, and a reduction of the number of exercises at first attempted. My experience and study lead me to believe that the best results are attained by comparatively few exercises, the greater part of them being quantitative in character. Quality of work, rather than quantity, should receive the most consideration. The tendency in my own work has been to strive after greater accuracy from year to year. To allow pupils to do quantitative exercises in a careless manner, with small regard for accuracy, is to do them an injury. Under these circumstances a quantitative exercise ceases to be such and becomes qualitative; and, moreover, it is a pretense and a sham. The position here taken as to number and kind of exercises is, I believe, in accord with the best thought and practice of the time. In support of this it is necessary only to mention the report of the Physical Conference to "The Committee of Ten." In the selection of experiments and methods of procedure great care has been taken to adopt only those that are capable of giving results of a considerable degree of accuracy in the hands of pupils. Excerpt from Everyday Physics: A Laboratory Manual The beginner in science must be guided carefully in his early experiments if he is to develop habits of careful observation, clear thinking, and orderly presentation of results. The exercises in this manual have been carefully designed and the instructions definitely stated, in order that the pupil may see clearly the end in view and the method of procedure, with the least possible amount of assistance on the part of the instructor in charge. On the other hand, the pupil must be given a chance to think for himself if he is ever to develop a scientific imagination or to acquire initiative. Under the head of Topics for Further Study and Investigation, hints, topics, and suggestions have been freely given for the development of projects in connection with which the pupil is expected, of his own initiative, to gather information from trade catalogues and textbooks, from practical men at work in his vicinity, or from observations at home, and to draw his own conclusions and report the results. A practical exercise offered under this head may often be substituted with profit for a more formal exercise outlined in the body of the text.' Special credit should be given in each case for this part of the work, and the pupil should be encouraged to make this department an important feature of his course. Nearly every exercise is preceded by an Introduction, intended to show the bearing of the topic in hand upon related subjects or to make the object of the exercise a little more definite, and is fol lowed, usually, by a few carefully framed questions or problems emphasizing the immediate application of the principle involved to the affairs of daily life. Excerpt from Physical Laboratory Manual: For Secondary Schools The number and variety of laboratory manuals in physics now on the market are so large that the merits of a new one are hardly to be sought in novelty of content, but rather in the utility of the material chosen from the abundant common store and in the method of presenting it. Believing that these are both matters Of great importance and that the possibilities of improvement in them have not yet been exhausted, the author has written this manual in the hope that it will con tribute toward this end. Since both the choice of material and the method of treat ment are in a large measure determined by the view enter tained in regard to the place and function of the laboratory work in the course in physics, a brief statement on this point seems desirable. Rejecting the extreme view that little im portance is to be attached to any part of the work except the laboratory course, as well as the opposite extreme which rele gates this part of the work to the position of a supplementary adjunct to the old form of text-book instruction, the author has adopted in his teaching and has assumed as the controlling principle in the preparation of this manual the View that the laboratory course should stand in coordinate relationship to the work of the class room; which, in his opinion, should include as important elements qualitative experimental work by the teacher, the systematic study of a good text-book, as large a use of reference books as time and opportunity permit, a constant appeal to the everyday experience of the pupils, and, finally, the recitation or quiz, in which the information gleaned from the several sources is classified, organized into scientific knowledge, and assimilated.
