Excerpt from Pennsylvania German, Vol. 2: A Collection Of Pennsylvania German Productions in Poetry And Prose When I published the volume entitled 'pennsylva nia German in 1903, a leading purpose was to pre sent the Pennsylvania German dialect in what I con oeived to be its proper form. Hitherto most produc tions in the dialect were presented in what I regarded as an unnatural form. Usually English spelling was employed, which made the dialect dificult to read, even for Germans. This I regard as one cause why the dia loet has been so large held in derision. This form was no doubt adopted by some who undertook to rep resent the Pennsylvania Germans, because they really knew little or nothing about the German language. The dialect in question is German, not English, and all attempts to present it in an English form will do vio lence and injustice to it, and fail to secure honor for it.
