While in these extreme positions, examine the hooks and the catch blocks on the valve stem crank-arms, seeing that there is about 1/32 inch clearance between the catch blocks and the hooks. If the clearance is not right, it may be adjusted by lengthening or shortening the dashpot rod, first being sure that the dashpot plunger is properly seated. Locating Eccentric on the Shaft. The valve gear will now be in condition to permit the eccentric to be turned to its proper position on the shaft. The tools needed are a pair of large dividers or compasses, a pair of outside calipers, a very small but strong cord, such as a fish line; a carpenter's plumb and level (although the plumb-line will serve the purpose if used carefully), and the scriber and the steel scale previously used. ' Fig. 4. Finding the Center Line of the Crank, and Drawing the Center Line of the Cylinder.-Fig. 5. Shaft Circle on the Crank, and Locating Position of the Exhaust Eccentric. Caliper the shaft at the eccentric and note the diameter on the scale., Spread the divider points to one-half this diameter. Assume that the crank runs "over" and that the engine stopped with the crank in the position shown in Fig. 4. Turn the full part of the eccentric towards the cylinder so that the head end hook will pick up the crank-arm. Then turn the eccentric in the direction the crank is to turn until the head end steam valve opens the port 1/32 inch. The eccentric of a one eccentric engine will then occupy about the position shown at the right in Fig. 4. With the scriber, mark the shaft with a light line, extending the line to the side of the eccentric, as shown at D, Fig. 4. shaft toward the...
