Presenting famous and infamous individuals and events that shocked the world and helped set the scene for today's history, this book illustrates how little is really known about some of the most dramatic and most-studied events. Who motivated whom, how and why, and what counterplots and alternative scenarios may have been at play? "Terrorism," the fomenting of revolution, undermining from within, and trumped up events to spur a nation to go to war: these techniques are not new. The public's interest in certain personalities never seems to wane -- Mata Hari, Gavrilo Princip, Sidney Reilly, T.E. Lawrence, Jimmy Doolittle, Hitler, Reinhard Heydrich and Lee Harvey Oswald among others. Each chapter presents two or three characters and elaborates on their lives and how they relate to historical events in the 20th century. The book starts with an incident in 1903 in the Balkans and moves chronologically forward to the assassination of JFK

Applications of Space Developments covers the proceedings of the 31st Annual Congress of the International Astronautical Federation on Applications of Space Developments, held in Tokyo, Japan. The contributors consider the significant achievements and activities in Japan in the main areas of space applications, such as telecommunications, earth and ocean observation, materials sciences, and space processes. This book is organized into 22 chapters, which reflect the four main areas covered in the Annual Congress, including Earth-Oriented Applications of Space Technology, Earth Observations, Low-Gravity Environment, and Communication Satellites. The first chapters deal with the monitoring of earth and ocean energy resources, earth satellite power stations, energy conversion and transfer, structure technology, system fabrication and assembly of large space structures, and, nuclear waste disposal in space. The succeeding chapters are devoted to weather satellites, earth and ocean dynamics, earth and atmosphere pollution, payloads for earth and ocean observations, data analysis. These topics are followed by discussions on the theoretical and experimental aspects of microgravity materials, fluid and life sciences, the simulation of microgravity environment on earth, the effects of weightlessness on man, and the earth applications of space experiments. The concluding chapters survey the operational, experimental, and communication satellites systems, with emphasis on economic aspects and on the prospects of TV satellites. This book will prove useful to space scientists and technologists, astronomers, and satellite and communications engineers.

Synastry is the branch of astrology that tells us how we relate to other people. How Joe relates to Mary & what Mary may think of that. In this complete, classic guide to astrology & relationships, Robson goes far beyond the usual "his planets vs: her planets." He studies the overall weight of the two charts, the fertility of the inner planets, the condition of the 7th house. He compares her-planets-to- his-planets as well as his-houses-to-her-houses. Robson considers how strongly the individual wants relationships - and how many, whether he/she will marry early or late - or not at all, the likelihood of children, the possibility of divorce. He gives rules for wedding dates. In an extraordinary appendix, he lists some 266 classified rules & aphorisms, culled from many ancient sources. This is perhaps the finest book ever written on astrology & relationships. About the author: Vivian Erwood Robson lived from 1890 to 1942. By trade he was a librarian. Like many librarians he had a natural bent for research, and, in his particular case, astrology. He studied ancient astrologers closely, including Ptolemy & William Lilly. His books on electional astrology, fixed stars, and relationships, are 20th century classics.

The Final Keystone By: John Kevin Crowley Every case in the history of Jurisprudence involves three things: Trust, Betrayal, and Accountability. Through his education, studies, and observations and experiences, author John Kevin Crowley has learned the interconnection of history, law, philosophy, and religion with the human condition. How that relationship has played out in human history leading to present day is a focus of The Final Keystone. This treatise is the story of us and the source of the lessons left unlearned. It is a reminder of what does not work and how what does work must be ever vigilantly guarded.

Immediately after the armistice was signed in November, 1918, an American journalist asked Paul von Hindenburg who won the war against Germany. He was the chief of the German General Staff, co-architect with Erich Ludendorff of Germany’s Eastern Front victories and its nearly war-winning Western Front offensives, and he did not hesitate in his answer. “The American infantry,” he said. He made it even more specific, telling the reporter that the final death blow for Germany was delivered by “the American infantry in the Argonne.” The British and the French often denigrated the American contribution to the war, but they had begged for US entry into the conflict, and their stake in America’s victory was, if anything, even greater than that of the United States itself. But How America Won WWI will not litigate the points of view of Britain and France. The book will accepts as gospel the assessment of the top German leader whose job it had been to oppose the Americans directly - that the American infantry won the war - and this book will tell how the American infantry did it.

A new interpretation of the Sarajevo assassination and the origins of World War I that places focus on the Balkans and the prewar period. The story has so often been told: Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Habsburg Empire, was shot dead on June 28, 1914, in the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo. Thirty days later, the Archduke's uncle, Emperor Franz Joseph, declared war on the Kingdom of Serbia, producing the chain reaction of European powers entering the First World War. In Misfire, Paul Miller-Melamed narrates the history of the Sarajevo assassination and the origins of World War I from the perspective of the Balkans. Rather than focusing on the bang of assassin Gavrilo Princip's gun or reinforcing the mythology that has arisen around this act, Miller-Melamed embeds the incident in the longer-term conditions of the Balkans that gave rise to the political murder. He thus illuminates the centrality of the Bosnian Crisis and the Balkan Wars of the early twentieth century to European power politics, while explaining how Serbs, Bosnians, and Habsburg leaders negotiated their positions in an increasingly dangerous geopolitical environment. Despite the absence of evidence tying official Serbia to the assassination conspiracy, Miller-Melamed shows how it spiraled into a diplomatic crisis that European statesmen proved unable to resolve peacefully. Contrasting the vast disproportionality between a single deadly act and an act of war that would leave ten million dead, Misfire contends that the real causes for the world war lie in "civilized" Europe rather than the endlessly discussed political murder.
