Patriot Royal takes you on a journey to the time of the American Revolution where you will relive the violent, miraculous birth of a nation as seen through the eyes of the representative central character -- Charles Royal -- who undergoes a personal revolution all his own. There are villains here as well as heroes; the bold, the occasionally bold, and the downright cowardly. And a few who will make you laugh right out loud. You will find love here -- unrequited and requited. Loyalty, betrayal, and redemption. There are formal set-piece military engagements involving thousands of soldiers in uniformed pageantry. There are bloody skirmishes too, and intensely personal battles that are waged within. You will be expected to endure all the formidable allies of armed conflict: battle wounds, illness, starvation, bitter cold, blistering heat, loneliness and despair. You will meet the enemy, come to know him well -- but you will never learn to hate him. Having said all this, you may be surprised to learn that this is not a tale of war, but of people. Some from the living past. Others imagined representatives of people whose lives and times beg for telling. They are all ready and anxiously waiting to escort you to a different, exciting, turbulent, history making, history shaping era. Let the journey begin

The Patriot class, often referred to as 'Baby Scots', were an immediate success displaying consistently good performance. The class was withdrawn over a two year period between 1960 and 1962 having all covered around 1.3 million miles each, unfortunately too early to be considered for preservation. The last two withdrawn were in good condition on withdrawal, but unfortunately all were scrapped.Although no Patriot in either rebuilt or unrebuilt forms survived into preservation a new 'Patriot' is under construction at the Llangollen Railway. The LMS-Patriot Project, a registered charity, is appealing for donations or regular contributions to build the new, 3 cylinder, Fowler designed, parallel boiler, 4-6-0 express passenger loco.Although mostly new, the group will use the leading wheel sets from two LMS 8F locomotives. An unrestored surviving LMS Fowler tender from Woodham Brothers Barry scrap yard will also be used for the project. The new build Patriot is being assembled at the Llangollen Railway Works, and will carry the number of the last built - LMS number 5551 or British Railways number 45551. After a public poll, the new Patriot locomotive will be named The Unknown Warrior, whose tomb is located in Westminster Abbey. The new Royal British Legion backed engine will be launched in late 2011 or early 2012 and this is the only 'official' book of the project. Containing hundreds of new, never before published photographs, British Steam - Patriot will tell the story of the engine from its original concept, follow its production throughout the building period and also its launch. The book will be endorsed by the Royal British Legion and promoted to all its members. This will be a must for all railway enthusiasts.

A riveting behind-the-scenes account of the transformative 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games—an extraordinary story of visionary leadership, love of country and the ability to dream boldly. When John Furlong emigrated from Ireland in 1974, the customs officer greeted him with “Welcome to Canada. Make us better”—an imperative that has defined Furlong’s life ever since. A passionate, accomplished athlete with a track record of community service, Furlong was a volunteer for Vancouver’s Olympic bid movement when it began in 1996 and then spent the next 14 years living and breathing the Olympics. Furlong and his organizing team, including 25,000 volunteers and many partners, orchestrated a remarkable Winter Games. Patriot Hearts is the story of how they did it. Working with Globe & Mail columnist Gary Mason, Furlong recounts the leadup to the Games and describes how he handled seemingly insurmountable setbacks—such as the death of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili, a global recession and the washedout snow at Cypress Bowl — to achieve a runaway success and, ultimately, a pivotal moment of nationhood.

Following the American Declaration of Independence, communities from Boston to Savannah were forced to make a choice: to strike out for an independent republic, or remain true to the British Crown. This study explores the origins, methods and combat record of the combatants on both sides. The American Revolutionary War was America's first civil war. As the conflict raged from Canada to the Caribbean and from India to Gibraltar, it was in American communities that the war was the most intimate, the most personal, and – accordingly – the most vicious. In 1775, the inhabitants of British America included those born in North America and newly arrived immigrants; the established landed aristocracy and the indigent; the diverse nations of the Native Americans; and people of African descent, both enslaved and free. The coming of war forced every person to make the choice of whether to side with the Patriots or remain loyal to the British Crown. With so many cross-cutting imperatives, the individual decisions made splintered communities, sometimes even households, turning neighbour against neighbour in an escalating spiral of ostracism, embargo, exile, raid, reprisal and counter-reprisal. Accordingly, the war on the frontiers and on the margins of conflict was as underhanded and ugly as any of the 21st century's insurgencies. In this study, the origins, fighting methods and combat effectiveness of the combatants fighting on both sides are assessed, notably in three significant clashes of the American Revolutionary War.

The war in Vietnam stemmed from the war in Korea (1950–1953). The United States gave military and political support to the French, who were fighting the Communist-led forces called Viet Minh and the NLF (National Liberation Front), which was being supported by the Soviet Union and Communist China. The French paratroopers, a.k.a. the French Foreign Legion, were taking a terrible beating from the enemy and sued for peace. Out of this debacle was established the Geneva Accords, in 1953, which ended the fighting for the time being. The political and military assistance the United States sent to the newly formed ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam) was small at first but then grew into an Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, and Coast Guard Operation, costing the United States billions of dollars before the Paris Peace Talks ended it all on October 8, 1972. The CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) operated an airline in Southeast Asia called Air America. The pilots who were good fliers became excellent fliers, getting small and large cargo and passenger planes into and out of dangerous airstrips carved out of the hills and jungles. These pilots did not consider themselves daredevils or adrenalin junkies. They loved flying so much (plus the pay was good) they would hardly ever refuse a mission. These guys and gals harked back to the days of the flying tigers and the pilots who flew the hump. From this bunch of derring-do pilots, crewmen, airstrip operators, and communications experts was born a great cadre of patriotic personnel that today is the core of the clandestine services. Most of these operatives have military backgrounds and are retired from the military.
