We find 'passion' in each story-not only the passion of love, but also lust, infatuation, fury, and self-determination. In the first story, JULIANNA, we find the roots of "The Slum Trilogy" which launched the author into becoming a prize-winning novelist. In CARESSE, we learn how an artist is overtaken by lust who tragically ends up with more than what she wanted. In HOLDING HANDS we find that 'puppy love' or infatuation can be an experience as powerful as full-blown love. Here a Moslem-influenced teenager arrives in New York from Abekestan and is exposed to a one-on-one encounter with a boy for the first time in her life. In PURGE we meet Emily, a sixty-five-year-old woman who has lived a life of fury, but who ends up realizing that only the experience of love can bring happiness. Finally, in CHRISTMAS TEARS, we follow a six-year-old girl, Millie, who emerges from a life of parental abuse to the realization that she can develop her own personal inner strength.

What is a word? I mean to that brain of ours, a sound distinctly different from tree branches in motion or those of leaves hanging down uncertain what to do next. We get simple instructions from tree noises except for getting out of the way should one of them collapse. Not much information was gathered after a life of staring up at trees in awe, not even a smile. The reason is obvious. We have to be told what a word is when struck on the ears for the first time, generally intended to identify some object that can bring danger or caring or usefulness. After that identification, its clear sailing. The word grows like the tree does, with additional information tacked on to get you to laugh or cry or shrug or wonder or turn away unconcerned. Unless the word is attached to other words, words lurking about that can be hooked up with ease. Something new will happen. The mind can become busy directing the body to cause something to come about. Something to come about comes in two sizes. The one size we know the best is an action to change what is around our body, directed by needs and wants. It is the second one coming about that has no outward change of body direction but does something special to the mind as to be carried around by that mind for a lifetime, if not longer. It is an amazing sense of ones feelings without motion to the body, rising out of words clustered together in certain ways that words can come together. This miracle of the human animal creates the feelings of a satisfaction never to be known to any other of the animals also fighting for survival. This sensation strikes deeply within oneself and is called by names we all recognize. There is poetry, prose, and plays to mention the few that bring me to a sense of emotion that otherwise would lie forever dormant in the rush through lifes practical requiring needs to keep oneself available for more gathering up of practical needs. My break with that cycle, as life permitted, is what is expressed, as best as I could, in this book as I wandered in and out of one act, plays, poems, and essays, all discoveries I had a chance to taste while the tasting was good.

The writer brings to bear virtually the experience of a lifetime to address three critical concerns: Common Sense and the Conspiracies, Covenant Echoes, and Amos Still Speaks! As for common sense, the problem is that it is so uncommon. The second topic considers the relevance of the covenant perspective for daily life. Along this line, it is said that the simplest form of covenant is the common meal. The ancient practice of hospitality expands on this notion. This text extends the subject further with a discussion of marriage, political foundations, voluntary associations, and paradigm shifts. The final topic examines the relevance of Amos for today. This is in keeping with the conviction that the more some things change, the more other matters remain constant. Then, too, if we fail to learn from the past, we are destined to repeat its tragic failures. While quite distinct, these three projects served to incite the reader to take scriptural teaching more seriously.

On the cover of Potpourri: Arbaugh, Bartholomew, and Engelhardt Family Lore/ is a photograph taken in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on February 22, 1932, including author William C. Arbaugh and his grandparents, Clara and William G. Arbaugh, with Nora Leone and Alonzo Harvey Arbaugh. In this volume celebrating the family history of the Arbaugh, Bartholomew, and Engelhardt families, Arbaugh captures times past. Fueled by the surprise discovery of a neatly tied bundle of letters, the family history revealed in them led to the preparation of this family memoir. Arbaugh's sisters, Nora Dorothy and Mary Margaret, were soon engrossed along with their brother in letters revealing the heartfelt views of their mother, Clara Engelhardt, and their grandmother. These letters described her interest in William G. Arbaugh, a young college friend she fancied. The letters chronicled the strong bond between Clara and William, eventually leading to their marriage upon completion of their education. These letters and the others they discovered served to deepen their respect for them and furthered their understanding of their idealism and strong faith. Potpourri shares family lore, ranging from Germany and the Caribbean to Indiana and Illinois with a broad reach from life on small-scale family farm prior to common use of electricity to the age of atomic energy.
