This is a small treatise on the Advaita philosophy by Sri Shankaracharya with the Vartika of Sureshwaracharya. Characterized by extreme brevity of expression on the one hand, and marvellous sublimity of thought on the other, this work contains the quintessence of the Upanishads. It presents the theoretical aspect of the one Reality along with the practical way of realizing one’s identity with It in samadhi through the symbol, OM. With a lucid translation, an informative introduction, notes, and a glossary, this book will be of great value to all students of Vedanta. Published by Advaita Ashrama, a publication house of Ramakrishna Math, Belur Math, India.

Shenkottai Sri Avudai Akkal, a remarkable eighteenth-century woman saint from Tamil Nadu, was a self-realised advaitin who sang passionately about the ecstasy of spiritual union with the Absolute. A desolate and stigmatised Brahmin child-widow, she was initiated into Vedanta by the great master Tiruvisainallur Shridhara Venkatesa Ayyawal. Her songs, a radical elision of the metaphysical sublime and personal devotion, are narrated through existential tropes sourced from daily life, and also offer a powerful critique of the oppressive orthodox socio-religious practices of that period. Composed in simple, colloquial Tamil, and bringing hope and solace to women in general and widows in particular for almost three centuries, these songs by Avudai Akkal were preserved within the oral tradition by Brahmin women of Tirunellveli district who sang them on all occasions. The songs were documented in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and have appeared in many Tamil publications. They appear in English translation for the first time in this book. Each song is accompanied by annotations and themed essays. Published by Zubaan.

This erudite and wide-ranging anthology offers a panoramic view of Vedānta in Śaṅkara’s own words, with selections from standard translations of his commentaries on the Upaniṣads, the Brahma-sūtra (Vedānta-sūtra) and the Bhagavad-gītā—texts which together form the scriptural canon of Vedānta—and an independent treatise, the Upadeśa Sāhasri, on whose authenticity there is unanimity. Exhibiting a deep empathy with the living tradition, Sudhakshina has selected passages that explain all the important concepts and teachings, including up-to-date deliberations on Śaṅkara. Her general and sectional introductions illuminate and demystify the esoteric concepts, providing a holistic perspective of Vedānta and making it eminently accessible to the modern reader.

This Upanishad forms a part of the Brahmana belonging to the Katha Shakha of the Krishna Yajur Veda. It stands in a class by itself. It combines charming poetry, elevating mysticism, and profound philosophy. The subject of the mystery of death is introduced through the medium of an interesting anecdote; and the teaching of the Upanishad is presented in the form of a dialogue between a mere boy, Nachiketa, and Yama, the King of Death. With the text of the Upanishad in Devanagari, a lucid and faithful translation of the text and commentary, relevant notes, reference to quotations, and index to texts, this Upanishad is a must for all students of Vedanta. Commentary by Swami Tejomayananda. Nirvana Shatkam, also known as atma shatkam, composed by Sri Adi Shankaracharya is a magnificently lucid piece of poetry, a razor-sharp distinction between reality and false identification and the product born from the very highest states of meditation. One by Shankaracharya negates all the usual identifications that we have and repeatedly insists, "chidananda roopa shivoham shivoham."
