Excerpt from A Remembrance for the Living to Pray for the Dead James Mum ford, a native of the county of Norfolk, was born in the year 1606. His name is spelt in various ways. The Catalogue of the English Province S. J. for the year 1642, calls him "Momford." That for the year 1655 calls him, in the body of it, "Jacobus Momfordus," whilst in the index to the same it has " Mumfordus." Mr. Dodd, in a very brief notice of this Father, in his Church History, vol. iii., p. 321, calls him "Monford;" and Father Nathaniel South-well, in his Bibliotheca Scriptorum Societatis Jesu (Rome, 1676) gives his name as "Jacobus Munfordus." He entered the Society of Jesus in the year 1626, made his noviceship at Watten, and was professed of the four vows on the 29th September, 1641. In the Catalogue of the Province for the year 1642, he appears as Father Minister of the English College S. J. at Liege, at the same time being Consultor of the College and teaching humanities. He was subsequently Rector of the College. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Divine Authority of the Old and New Testament Asserted Pretenfion to this Charaéter. I would be one Of the lafl to charge any Man with a Want of Honefiy and Sincerity: but there are ma ny Things in his Book that look like a wilful Perverfion and Mifreprefentation of Faéts, as well as Arguments and fometimes fo circum fianced, that it is fcarce pofiible for the molt extenfive Charity to fuppofe that it'was owing to mere Ignorance. Perhaps the Author him felf would not be willing to accept of this A pology. I cannot help looking upon it as an Honour to Chrifiianity, that its Adveifaries find themfelves obliged to take fuch Methods as thefe, in order to carry on their Defigns a gainft it. Excerpt from Prayers for the Dead, for the Use of Members of the Church of England: With a Preface; To Which Are Added Meditations on the Four Last Things, With Instructions for Using Them, and Other Devotions A witness in support of this view is found in the prevalence amongst all nations, in the most ancient times, of the rites of burial. There is the same sort of evidence that the universal custom of primitive times was to bury their dead out of their sight, that there is of the original worship of one God. And this custom is as undoubted a note of belief in the resurrection of the flesh, burning the body or yet worse departures from primitive practice of infidelity. Excerpt from Why Do We Pray for the Dead?: The Reasons for the Church's Belief in Purgatory Why do Catholics pray for the dead is a question frequently asked by our non-catholic fellow citizens. Since the practice of praying for the souls of the deceased is based upon the doctrine of Purgatory which was abandoned by the Reformers in the sixteenth century, and is now prao tically unknown among their fol lowers, the latter are naturally at a loss to understand the Catholic cus tom of praying for their departed brethren, or as it is commonly, called, the devotion to the poor souls. It has always been a source of great pleasure and satisfaction to the Author to visit and examine our most interesting and instructive old parish churches amongst the greatest glories of the country. And While he deeply laments that restorations of so many of them have been carried out in anything but a conservative spirit, it is impossible to be otherwise.
