Excerpt from Catalogue of Exhibitors in the United States Sections of the International Universal Exposition, Paris, 1900 Pursuant to that authority, the President appointed Ferdinand W. Peck, of Chicago, commissioner-general; Benjamin D. Woodward, of Columbia University, New York, Assistant commissioner-general; and Frederick Brackett, of the Treasury Department, Washington, Secre tary. In the organization which was afterward perfected two principal departments were created, one of exhibits and the other of business. Frederick J. V. Skiff, of the Field Columbian Museum of Chicago, was placed at the head of the first as director-in-chief of Exhibits, and Paul Black mar, also of Chicago, at the head of the second, as Director of Afiairs. The classification determined by the French authorities provided for the arrangement of exhibits in eighteen groups, but for reasons of economy and of efficiency these groups were distributed by the United States Com missioner among ten chief officers, called directors. In some cases two, or even three, groups were assigned to a single director. The resulting departments are as follows.
