Objectives are to: construct, tracer/flow test, and simultaneously process two side-by-side large scale retorts (Retorts 7 and 8) formed by blasting to a horizontal free face; conduct small-scale start up tests, prior to ignition of Retorts 7 and 8, on at least two quarter size retorts (miniretorts); develop mine stability data for commercial size retorts; develop and test advanced retort ignition systems; collect evaluate and report environmental data; and test special mining and remote sensing equipment. This quarterly report covers the activities for the first three months of the Phase II Program. The major activities at Logan Wash and on Phase II during the months of June, July, and August were: driving the access and ventilation drifts towards the underground locations for Retorts 7 and 8; beginning construction for surface facilities; mining the rooms for the mini retorts; and developing an instrumentation program for DOE funding.

Phase II of the Cooperative Agreement between the Department of Energy (DOE) and Occidental Oil Shale, Inc. (OOSI) has the primary objective of simultaneously processing two commercial-size modified in situ (MIS) retorts. Most of the data obtained from this program will appear in the Summary Report to be issued six months after the completion of Phase II. This Final Report summarizes the progress of the project through August 19, 1981, the effective data of the DOE discontinuance of funding. As agreed under Modification 014 to the Agreement, there will be no reports between this Final Report and the Summary Report. Through the Discontinuance, the work covered in Phase II include: mining for, and formation of, Retorts 7, 8, and Room 8X (R7, 8, and 8X); construction of processing facilities; installation of mine stability and processing instrumentation; collection and analysis of a R7 and 8 core; execution of a mini-retort blast and ignition test program; and continuous environmental support.
