The genealogy of the Mangold family from northern Bavaria begins with Simon and Sabina in the early 1800s. The immigrant family of eight left their homeland and sailed across the Atlantic to the New World. In 1850, they arrived in New York City and traveled in-land to settle in the predominantly German neighborhood of Over-the-Rhine in Cincinnati, Ohio. Only Matthew, the oldest son of Simon and Sabina, continued the Mangold family name. With a successful downtown business, he and his wife were able to offer their children the opportunity of a college education.

The Sino-Western Cultural Relations Journal of which 38 fascicles were published between 1979 and 2016 is a mine of information on issues, events, articles and reviews on the subject. It attracted at first a very small constituency of experts in this relatively new field of research, at first focusing on the early China Mission, but then widening its scope and addressing the whole area of cultural relations between China and the West. "I believe our gateway ancestor to be William Ducke (Duke), who was born in 1620 in England," writes the author. William most likely came from Devonshire, England, and landed in Warrosquyouke County, Virginia (later known as Isle of Wight County), according to historians. William was sponsored by businessman Justinian Cooper, who sponsored and received land grants for dozens of immigrants to IOW Virginia during the colony's early history. In 1637, William is believed to have made the actual voyage on "The George." In Isle of Wight County, near the Old Cypress Swamp, William Ducke established his home. John Duke, who was born in 1640, was the first group 2 ancestor to be born in colonial America. He married Elizabeth King, and the Duke line of Group 2 was officially "born."
