DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Nominations for Elective Office in the United States My attention was first called to the subject of nominations while pursuing a course of study in American institutions, as an undergraduate student at Harvard University. In connection with that study I found, to my surprise, that although certain phases of the present nominating system have, from time to time, been touched upon in magazine articles and elsewhere, no systematic attempt has ever been made to consider in all its bearings this very important part of our governmental machinery. It is for the purpose of supplying this deficiency that the following pages have been written. In them I have endeavored to give some account of the origin and development of our nominating system, to describe it as it exists to-day, and then to point out the evils that have arisen under it, and the remedies that have been suggested for their removal. It has been my object throughout to look at the question from a strictly non-partisan standpoint, and to treat it entirely as a scientific study. DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe passage of Citizens United by the Supreme Court in 2010 sparked a renewed debate about campaign spending by large political action committees, or Super PACs. Its ruling said that it is okay for corporations and labor unions to spend as much as they want in advertising and other methods to convince people to vote for or against a candidate. This book provides a wide range of opinions on the issue. Includes primary and secondary sources from a variety of perspectives; eyewitnesses, scientific journals, government officials, and many others.
