Book review by Beverly Seaton Ingersoll Author: 4 Months of God's Mercy "No Arm Around My Shoulder" is a story of life long ago when survival was an everyday occurrence. A small child's only desire to be wanted and loved by his family, but in return must endure hostility and scorn for the first 18 years of his life. This story cannot help but touch the soul of everyone who reads it. I was heart-stricken by the pain and adversity this author endured as a child, but also inspired, because I know he is a warm, caring, honorable man today. The history Fred describes in Southern Idaho as he and his family moved from place to place just to put food on the table reminded me of times when life was much harder than today. I felt as though I was right there with him. The author is an inspiration to all of how strong a person's character is and that they can successfully overcome extremely difficult obstacles.

Two years ago, Olivia Martindale left behind her Montana hometown and her husband, Jace, certain it was the best decision for both of them. Back temporarily to protect her almost-adopted daughters from their biological mother, she discovers an old, handwritten cookbook in the attic. Its pages are stained and torn, their edges scorched by flame. Some have been smeared by water ... or tears. The recipes are written in different hands and in different languages. In between the pages are intriguing mementos, including a feather, a pressed rose, a charm, and unfamiliar photographs. Hoping the recipes will offer a window into her grandmother's closely guarded past, Olivia decides to make each dish, along with their favorite family cake recipes, and records her attempts. The result, like much of her life to date, involves a parade of near-disasters and chaotic appearances by her doctor mother, her blunt grandma, her short-tempered sister, and Olivia's two hilarious daughters. The project is messy, real--and an unintended hit with viewers. Even more surprising is the family history Olivia is uncovering, and her own reemerging ties to Montana, and to Jace.

There is no Handbook for the Homeless. Nobody teaches seminars or gives guided tours that promise to give you the inside scoop on where to flop when you’re homeless. You have to figure it out as you go along. Few of us plan for it. Perhaps, in today’s cliché driven world, it means we planned to fail. But how much farther can you fall than sleeping in the cemetery, curled up on your son’s grave because it’s the only piece of real estate you own. At best, if you find yourself homeless, if you haven’t burned all your karma, you will find a spirit guide. More likely the guide will find you. In this first novel by Joyce Trainor, Aileen Roark’s middle class life is forever changed by a drunk driver. Overwhelmed by medical and legal debt, Aileen retreats to a tiny rundown apartment and tries desperately to rebuild her life with only her son’s enormous dog for companionship. But the downward spiral continues and Aileen stumbles into a world unknown to her, hidden from wealthy tourists and part time residents in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, New Mexico. It’s a place where a night on the street can mean a death sentence or a ‘Go Straight to Jail’ card and change everything you believe about the ragged people standing on the corner. Street dwelling Wizard, a relic of the communes that dotted New Mexico in the 1960s and 70s; Father Rico, elderly priest to an impoverished parish; ex-boxer Cesar Jesus Chavez, now night manager at a cheap motel; and the quirky Billy James Dean, Esquire, defender of the almost guilty, help Aileen survive.

Life is a mystery. Certain aspects we can see and others we cannot. However, life wasn’t explained to Cee this way. Life was an organized set of rules erected and reinforced by authority figures who held the power, the answers, and the respect. Cee learned to go along with these systems until life forced her to wake up, revealing destruction she could no longer ignore: parents who had lied to her and needed help with money, and the obligation Cee felt as a college sophomore to help them put things back together again. But no matter how much she tried, she couldn’t because she herself was falling apart. The life she had learned to live by was not only vacuous but porous. The systems everyone was blindly participating in were broken. But why wasn’t anyone saying so? Because no one knew how. Loose Ends is Cee's inward journey through the hopeless, adult world battling depression, social pressure, and despair, that ultimately teaches her that suffering is a necessary portal through which we all must travel. There, we not only gain a greater understanding of the world around us, but, we become who we are meant to be.
