People Apart: 1950s Cape Town Revisited offers a rich and fascinating insight into South Africa at the brink of the apartheid through Bryan Heseltine's previously unpublished photography of the 1940s and 50s. The photographs offer a unique glimpse into the lives of South Africans who would feel the full force of apartheid through the 1950s and beyond, showing some of the dreadful housing conditions that existed on the periphery of the city, but also testifying to the vibrancy of social and cultural life, including the work of street craftsmen, beer brewing, music and dance. People Apart offers an intimate insight into the diverse styles and identities of Cape Town's inhabitants during this period, both through intimate portraits as well as unique documentations of the shack dwellings, which dominated the urban landscape. The collection also significantly demonstrates an early attempt to find a visual language with which to represent apartheid South Africa to a British Public. Author Darren Newbury contextualizes Heseltine's photographs through extensive biographical, and socio-historical research and views this body of work both within its contemporary context as well as asking what these images offer today, in the post-apartheid era. Contributions from Vivian Bickford-Smith and Sean Field probe questions such as the nature of memory and identity, as well as the place of photography in the documentation and the active 'making' of history.
The town of Newbury, incorporating the villages of Old Town, Byfield, and Plum Island, was settled in 1635. The extensive Newbury plantation was primarily agricultural, although many early residents also earned their living through shipbuilding along the Merrimack River. Newbury is rich with natural landmarks and stunning landscapes, including a large portion of the Great Marsh, the largest salt marsh in New England. Byfield was the site of early industry, with gristmills and sawmills sprouting up along the Quascacunquen, now the Parker River, as early as the 1630s. Mills producing products from nails to woolens and snuff prospered into the 20th century. Ancient houses, many of them the homes of famous sons and daughters, stand as a legacy to Newbury's early history. During the 19th century, Plum Island became a fashionable seaside resort and hunters and fishermen took advantage of the birds and fish that proliferated there. The three communities bring together a citizenry fiercely proud of its heritage and a rich history of working and playing on land and sea.

In the aftermath of the 1994 genocide, Rwandan women faced the impossible—resurrecting their lives amidst unthinkable devastation. Haunted by memories of lost loved ones and of their own experiences of violence, women rebuilt their lives from “less than nothing.” Neither passive victims nor innate peacemakers, they traversed dangerous emotional and political terrain to emerge as leaders in Rwanda today. The life and times of an independent, British family-owned bus company based in Berkshire that rose up following World War I. Between the two world wars and in the years that followed, several generations relied on country buses. In the days when few could afford a car, the bus was the medium to move between homes in often remote villages and the places where they increasingly went to school, worked, and enjoyed their leisure hours. This is the story of one such chain of villages across the Berkshire Downs—and the family-owned business that grew up around satisfying their needs. George Hedges came back from World War I to become a horse-drawn carrier, but with ambitions to motorize his business. With his family taking the wheel in the 1950s and beyond, Reliance extended its reach nationwide and even internationally. The small village where it all started, Brightwalton, woke in the mornings to the cough of diesel engines from both Reliance buses and a relative’s lorries. When both businesses departed, the village lost many of its jobs, its two pubs, and very nearly its school.
