Creativity and critical thinking are key skills for complex, globalised and increasingly digitalised economies and societies. While teachers and education policy makers consider creativity and critical thinking as important learning goals, it is still unclear to many what it means to develop these skills in a school setting. To make it more visible and tangible to practitioners, the OECD worked with networks of schools and teachers in 11 countries to develop and trial a set of pedagogical resources that exemplify what it means to teach, learn and make progress in creativity and critical thinking in primary and secondary education.

The book emphasizes the new knowledge and expanded talents teachers and students who use technology need to have in order to develop in their future careers and social life--what the Partnership for 21st Century Skills calls the 3Rs (the changing content of the academic curriculum as schools move to include problem solving and inquiry learning in subject areas) and the 4Cs (the skills of critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity). It shows how teaching and learning with the 3Rs and 4Cs helps teachers using technology prepare, deliver, and assess lessons differently, while students use technology to think critically and creatively about all learning they do. This book requires an interdisciplinary understanding of creativity, ideal for the formation of a digital public culture. Educating students, young professionals and future engineers is to develop their capacity for creativity. Can creativity be learned? With this question, the relations of technology and art appear in a new light. Especially the notion of "progress" takes on a new meaning and must be distinguished from innovation. The discussion of particular educational approaches, the exploration of digital technologies and the presentation of best practice examples conclude the book. University teachers show how the teaching of creativity reinforces the teaching of other subjects, especially foreign languages.
This series brings together a range of articles, extracts from books and reports that inform an understanding of secondary schools in today's educational climate.
