When Rolf Dahlgren and I embarked on preparing this book series, Rolf took prime responsibility for monocotyledons, which had interested him for a long time. After finishing his comparative study and family classification of the monocots, he devoted much energy to the acquisition and editing of family treatments for the present series. After his untimely death, Peter Goldblatt, who had worked with him, continued to handle further incoming monocot manuscripts until, in the early 1990s, his other obligations no longer allowed him to continue. At that time, some 30 manuscripts in various states of perfection had accumulated, which seemed to form a solid basis for a speedy completion of the FGVP monocots; with the exception of the grasses and orchids which would appear in separate volumes. I felt a strong obligation to do everything to help in publishing the manuscripts that had been put into our hands. I finally decided to take charge of them personally, although during my life as a botainst I had never seriously been interested in monocots.

Climate change has shaped life in the past and will continue to do so in the future. Understanding the interactions between climate and biodiversity is a complex challenge to science. With contributions from 60 key researchers, this book examines the ongoing impact of climate change on the ecology and diversity of life on earth. It discusses the latest research within the fields of ecology and systematics, highlighting the increasing integration of their approaches and methods. Topics covered include the influence of climate change on evolutionary and ecological processes such as adaptation, migration, speciation and extinction, and the role of these processes in determining the diversity and biogeographic distribution of species and their populations. This book ultimately illustrates the necessity for global conservation actions to mitigate the effects of climate change in a world that is already undergoing a biodiversity crisis of unprecedented scale.

Due to many issues related to long-term carbon dynamics, an improved understanding of the biology of C4 photosynthesis is required by more than the traditional audience of crop scientists, plant physiologists, and plant ecologists. This work synthesizes the latest developments in C4 biochemistry, physiology, systematics, and ecology. The book concludes with chapters discussing the role of C4 plants in the future development of the biosphere, particularly their interactive effects on soil, hydrological, and atmospheric processes.

The sedge family, Cyperaceae, is the third largest family of monocotyledonous plants. They are of significant economic importance, especially among rural communities in the tropics, where sedges are intensively used. The World Checklist of Cyperaceae provides a single source guide to the correct names of all sedges, the source of their publication and indicating which names are currently accepted and which are synonyms. It will be a standard nomenclatural reference for further research into this important family. This makes it an invaluable reference for agriculturists, horticulturists, ecologists, conservationists and plant biologists.

Sedges (of the plant family Cyperaceae) can appear seemingly insignificant. On closer inspection, however, their hidden, complex and remarkable constructive design is revealed. In order to facilitate identification of the 63 genera occurring in Africa and Madagascar, this book includes, for the first time, photographs of the living sedge plants in their natural habitats and line drawings of their morphology. Additionally, photographs of small fruits, as they appear under a microscope, are included as well as full botanical descriptions, so that a detailed assessment of these plants is possible. The genera illustrated and accounted for here, carry the names that were applied at the turn of the century. Most of these names are still in use today, however, due to recent and on-going research there have been changes, not only to genera, but also to species within these genera. A list of these name changes is included so that the work is fully up to date at this time. Sedges are widely distributed in a number of diverse habitats (most often found in wetlands and on the margins of lakes, rivers and streams). This publication focuses on those genera occurring in Africa and Madagascar, however, as these plants are also represented on other continents, the taxonomic tools for identification presented here will be useful to those further afield. Beyond this, this book provides a window to the beauty of these often overlooked, but exquisite, plants.

One half of a two volume set that presents illustrations and descriptions of all of the known sedge plants located in Illinois. In addition to the descriptions, information is presented on habitat, range, and distribution of the plants. The black and white illustrations detail all parts of the plant from flowering parts to the root system. This new edition of the 1976 work adds six additional taxa of sedges and takes into account a number of nomenclatural changes and distributional records that have been added. The pharmacopoeias of most African countries are available and contain an impressive number of medicinal plants used for various therapeutic purposes. Many African scholars have distinguished themselves in the fields of organic chemistry, pharmacology, and pharmacognosy and other areas related to the study of plant medicinal plants. However, until now, there is no global standard book on the nature and specificity of chemicals isolated in African medicinal plants, as well as a book bringing together and discussing the main bioactive metabolites of these plants. This book explores the essence of natural substances from African medicinal plants and their pharmacological potential. In light of possible academic use, this book also scans the bulk of African medicinal plants extract having promising pharmacological activities. - The book contains data of biologically active plants of Africa, plant occurring compounds and synthesis pathways of secondary metabolites - This book explores the essence of natural substances from African medicinal plants and their pharmacological potential - The authors are world reknowned African Scientists
