In most regions of the world, nematodes are recognized as important pests of bananas. Because banana nematodes attack the root and/or corm tissues, plant growth and yield are affected. The objective of these technical guidelines is to stimulate interest in nematode resistance and tolerance screening in bananas, and toprovide a methodology for carrying out such screening: plant material, nematode inoculum, screening experiments in pots or in the field, nematode reproduction assessment, and damage assessment.

The increasing use of integrated crop management, often requiring a reduction in the reliance upon chemical control, means that the need to rapidly identify pest nematodes has never been greater. This second edition of this standard reference work familiar to all plant nematologists is therefore even more useful than its predecessor published in 1986.The in-depth description of the life histories of the genera of the Tylenchida have been retained and brought up-to-date through the inclusion of all the research carried out between the publication of the last edition and this new edition. This expanded edition includes detailed diagnoses of well over 200 genera and familial and ordinal groups, and is well-illustrated with drawings of type or representative species. These, together with comprehensive lists of species and genera and their synonymies provide the foundation for the status and validation of each taxon within the Tylenchida. The guidelines are divided into two parts. The first part makes general recommendations on how best to move Musa germplasm. The second part covers the important pests and diseases of quarantine concern. The information given on a particular pest or disease is not exhaustive but concentrates on those aspects that are most relevant to quarantine.
This series originated during a visit of prof. K. G. Mukerji to the CNR Plant Protection Institute at Bari, Italy, in November 2005. Both editors convened to produce a series of five volumes focusing, in a multi-disciplinary approach, on recent advances and achievements in the practice of crop protection and integrated pest and disease management. This fourth Volume deals with management of nematodes parasitic of tree crops, and includes a section on tropical fruit crops and commodities, as well as a second section on tree crops from more temperate areas.
