Excerpt from Music in the Church The subject Of our study is Music in the Church, i.e. Music subject to the influence and employed in the service Of religion. Like all the other arts, music has been brought into close association with religion, and has not only been able to render valuable aid to the Church in her worship, but has itself been enormously benefited and enriched by the new Spirit breathed into it by that association. It was indeed the demands made by the Church upon the art that awakened it from the lethargy in which it lay, and urged it forward to develop its resources. The early history Of music, once it attained the dignity Of an art worthy to have its history recorded, is almost entirely a history of sacred music. But the association of music with religion is not merely a matter Of past history. TO the present day that association continues with most beneficial results both to the Church and to the art of music. True, with the advance Of the art it was able to strike out new forms and to develop along other lines. Sacred music, instead Of being the whole of the art, is now only one branch Of it. But it is a branch of the utmost importance. The art would be incalculably the poorer were the musical wealth which it has poured into the treasury Of the Church not credited to it. And on the other hand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Church Music He now believes that he sees his way clearly with regard to some of the matters he has to treat upon he is still puzzled with regard to others. If his book, with all its failings, gives pause to thought and promotes discussion, and if, with God's blessing, such thought and discussion should end in the further improvement of the music of our parish churches, whether according to the lines laid down here or otherwise, he will be indeed grateful that he has been allowed to make thus his humble contribution to the furtherance of the greater glory of God. Excerpt from Church Music, Vol. 2: November, 1906 This volume contains 576 pages (besides 32 pages of Music Supplements) of the very best of Church music literature, combining theory with practical illustration, by the fore most authorities, including the Solesmes school, in England, America, France, Italy and Germany. Any one at all interested in the subject of Catholic liturgy who looks over the complete table of contents of this volume will be convinced that it covers every phase of the question of Church-music reform, and that its first appeal has been not only dignified in the best sense of the word, but also all-sided. Excerpt from Church Music, Vol. 1: June, 1906 A change of considerable importance is found in the Ger man tradition Of the plainchant. In the earliest staff nota tion codices Of German origin we find a frequent use of the minor third a - c, where codices of other countries have the second a - b-flat or a - b. Wagner has no doubt that the ver sion of the non - German codices is the original, but thinks that the change is older than the Oldest staff notation mss. He is of opinion that the reason for the change is to be found in the difficulty that attaches to the semitone. Rie mann, in the work quoted above, sees in these things rem nants of the pentatonic scale, of which traces are to b found in many other phrases Of plainchant, such as the in tonation of the per omnia before the Preface. Radically the two views are identical. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Instrumental Music in the Public Worship of the Church It will, no doubt, be said that the attempt to prove the unjustifiable employment of instrumental music in the public worship of the Church is schismatical, since the practice is now well-nigh universal; that it is trivial, inasmuch as it concerns a mere circumstantial in the services of religion; and that it is useless, as the ten deney which is resisted is 1nv1nclble, and is destined to triumph throughout Protestant Christendom. To all this one answer alone is offered, and it is sufficient, namely: that the attempt is grounded in truth. It in volves a contest for a mighty and all-comprehending principle, by opposmg one of the special forms in which it is now commonly transcended and violated. It is that principle, emphasized in the following re marks as scriptural and regulative, that lends impor tance to the discussion, and redeems it from the re proach of being narrow and trifling. Excerpt from The Evolution of Church Music IT is eminently appropriate that the story of the Evolution of Music should be written by a clergyman. A retrospect which reaches back no farther in the land from which we derive both our language and our literature than the third decade of the thirteenth century will discover that the first English school of music of which any trace has been discovered, was founded about that time by John of Porn sete, a monk attached to the famous monastery at Reading, in Berkshire. Its records still survive, and the curious scholar may find them in a manuscript bearing date 1226, which is known as the Reading ms., and which is among the treasures of the British Museum. Excerpt from Church Music, Vol. 2: January, 1907 In our days all authorities on Chant are agreed as regards accompaniment, and answer decidedly in the affirmative. A self-understood presumption is, that the accompaniment be in every respect adapted to fulfill its purpose, and in no regard detrimental to the melody.
