The first release of Multimedia Fluid Mechanics broke new ground by providing a cross-platform, interactive, visual resource, of use and appeal to students and professional alike. By helping users to visualise the enormous complexity of fluid flows, it complemented traditional mathematical treatments and enabled users literally to get a picture of the phenomenon in question. This new issue takes advantage of developments in technology to broaden the appeal by including, on one disk, versions in English, Spanish and French.
Inspired by the reception of the first edition, the objectives in Multimedia Fluid Mechanics 2/e remain to exploit the moving image and interactivity of multimedia to improve the teaching and learning of fluid mechanics in all disciplines by illustrating fundamental phenomena and conveying fascinating fluid flows for generations to come. This completely new edition on DVD includes: *Twice the coverage with new modules on Turbulence, Control Volumes, Interfacial Phenomena, and Similarity and Scaling *Four times the number of fluids videos, now nearly 1000 *Now over 20 Virtual labs and simulations *Dozens of new interactive demonstrations and animations New features: *Improved navigation via side bars that provide rapid overview of modules and guided browsing *Media libraries of each chapter giving a snapshot of videos, each with descriptive labels *Facility to create movie playlists, invaluable in teaching *Higher resolution graphics, with full or part screen viewing options *Operates on PC and Mac OSX. Using the DVD with the Lion and Windows 7 Operating System: Apple has released a piece of software called Rosetta and it adds the functionality required to make the existing DVD work properly with the latest Apple operating Systems and with Windows 7. No additional development work is required. The install of the Rosetta software is automatic if not already installed - the only requirement is that the Mac be online or the user have the original OSX DVD (if not online).

Understanding the behaviour of particles suspended in a fluid has many important applications across a range of fields, including engineering and geophysics. Comprising two main parts, this book begins with the well-developed theory of particles in viscous fluids, i.e. microhydrodynamics, particularly for single- and pair-body dynamics. Part II considers many-body dynamics, covering shear flows and sedimentation, bulk flow properties and collective phenomena. An interlude between the two parts provides the basic statistical techniques needed to employ the results of the first (microscopic) in the second (macroscopic). The authors introduce theoretical, mathematical concepts through concrete examples, making the material accessible to non-mathematicians. They also include some of the many open questions in the field to encourage further study. Consequently, this is an ideal introduction for students and researchers from other disciplines who are approaching suspension dynamics for the first time.
This informal introduction to computational fluid dynamics and practical guide to numerical simulation of transport phenomena covers the derivation of the governing equations, construction of finite element approximations, and qualitative properties of numerical solutions, among other topics. To make the book accessible to readers with diverse interests and backgrounds, the authors begin at a basic level and advance to numerical tools for increasingly difficult flow problems, emphasizing practical implementation rather than mathematical theory.?Finite Element Methods for Computational Fluid Dynamics: A Practical Guide?explains the basics of the finite element method (FEM) in the context of simple model problems, illustrated by numerical examples. It comprehensively reviews stabilization techniques for convection-dominated transport problems, introducing the reader to streamline diffusion methods, Petrov?Galerkin approximations, Taylor?Galerkin schemes, flux-corrected transport algorithms, and other nonlinear high-resolution schemes, and covers Petrov?Galerkin stabilization, classical projection schemes, Schur complement solvers, and the implementation of the k-epsilon turbulence model in its presentation of the FEM for incompressible flow problem. The book also describes the open-source finite element library ELMER, which is recommended as a software development kit for advanced applications in an online component.?
The objective of the present book, which tries to summarize in an edited format and in a fairly comprehensive manner, many of the recent technical research accomplishments in the area of Smart Actuators and Smart Sensors, is to combine researchers and scientists from different fields into a single virtual room. The book hence reflects the multicultural nature of the field and will allow the reader to taste and appreciate different points of view, different engineering methods and different tools that must be jointly considered when designing and realizing smart actuation and sensing systems.
MECHANICS OF FLUIDS presents fluid mechanics in a manner that helps students gain both an understanding of, and an ability to analyze the important phenomena encountered by practicing engineers. The authors succeed in this through the use of several pedagogical tools that help students visualize the many difficult-to-understand phenomena of fluid mechanics. Explanations are based on basic physical concepts as well as mathematics which are accessible to undergraduate engineering students. This fourth edition includes a Multimedia Fluid Mechanics DVD-ROM which harnesses the interactivity of multimedia to improve the teaching and learning of fluid mechanics by illustrating fundamental phenomena and conveying fascinating fluid flows.
