Power factor correction (PFC) is a technique of counteracting the undesirable effects of electric loads that create a power factor that is less than one. Power factor correction may be applied either by an electrical power transmission utility to improve the stability and efficiency of the transmission network or correction may be installed by individual electrical customers to reduce the costs charged to them by their electricity supplier. In order to improve transmission efficiency, power factor correction research has become a hot topic. Many control methods for the power factor correction (PFC) have been proposed. This research work describes the effect of combination of loads on power factor of microcontroller based power system and also described the design and analysis of a power factor correction using PIC microcontroller chip. This involves measuring the power factor value from the load using PIC and proper algorithm to determine the sufficient firing angle to trigger the TRIAC in order to compensate excessive reactive components, thus bringing power factor near to unity. In this research work, four experiments were conducted.

In recent years, the power quality of the ac system has become great concern due to the rapidly increased numbers of electronic equipment, power electronics and high voltage power system. Most of the commercial and industrial installation in the country has large electrical loads which are severally inductive in nature causing lagging power factor which gives heavy penalties to consumer by electricity board. This situation is taken care by PFC. PFC is the capacity of absorbing the reactive power produced by a load. In case of fixed loads, this can be done manually by switching of capacitors, however in case of rapidly varying and scattered loads it becomes difficult to maintain a high power factor by manually switching on/off the capacitors in proportion to variation of load within an installation. This drawback is overcome by using an Automatic Power Factor Correction panel. This book focuses on the design and implementation of power factor correction using PIC micro-controller chip, determine the power factor of the loaded power system, and generate proper action to calculate and to add sufficient capacitor.

Now day, power factor is very important in electrical system. Power factor means defined as the ratio of the real power over apparent power. It is a measure of how efficiently electrical power is converted into useful work output. Low power factor is expensive, inefficient and waste power. It is because reduces an electrical system's distribution capacity by increasing current flow and causing voltage drops. Normally in industry, they have system capacitor bank to improve power factor. But in house we don't have the system capacitor bank. The project is power factor corrector. This project focuses to need improve power factor for application in home. The objective the project is reducing usage current. In this project, a Microcontroller PIC 16F877A will be used as a brain of the system that will control the system through a PIC Basis programming. The PIC Basic Programming will be developed to control when capacitor can turn on. Input of the Microcontroller is a current transducer. Function of the current transducer to read the current from line. The current transducer can convert 5A to 5 mA. The maximum value can read of current transducer is 5A. We use current transducer because Microcontroller very sensitive device. It only can read voltage from 0V to 5V. When give value greater than 5V to Microcontroller, it can make Microcontroller burnt. When the Microcontroller senses certain current, it will give signal to output to turn on the capacitor. Function of the capacitor to improve level power factor. The benefit improve power factor is reduce of electricity bills, increased electrical system capacity and voltage drop at the point of use will be reduced. -Author.
