The ASEAN Small and Medium Business Improvement Project seeks to contribute to this awareness of the significance of small and medium businesses (SMBs) in a direct and practical manner: through the examination of SMBs at ground level, and the dissemination of findings for policy action. The project is the collaborative effort of research teams in each of the ASEAN countries (except Brunei; the project was formulated before that country joined ASEAN), coordinated centrally at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS).

Previous studies have indicated that finance, marketing, and problems of production management are three of the major constraints facing small and medium sized businesses (SMBs) in the ASEAN region. These three concerns are addressed in successive phases of the ASEAN Small and Medium Businesses Improvement Project coordinated by the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. The present paper draws on the findings of the second phase, which focused on marketing issues.

This book provides an intensive review of the economic competitiveness of the Singapore economy and identifies the strategies which will allow the economy to retain its competitive advantage in an increasingly globalised economic environment in future years. It is a timely exercise in view of the fact that the international trading and investment climate has liberalised considerably, and the regional economies are achieving remarkable economic growth and development which begin to challenge Singapore's competitive edge as a regional transportation hub, international financial centre and a primary regional centre for technology and education.

Fulfilling the Export Potential of Small and Medium Firms addresses the question, `How can economic policy contribute to a strong export performance by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in developing countries?' In today's increasingly integrated world economy, such a performance can make a significant difference to the growth, employment creation and income distribution of many developing countries. The study uses information from specifically designed surveys of SME exporters in Japan, Indonesia, Korea and Colombia, together with a range of evidence from other sources, to ascertain what types of support within the areas of technology, marketing and finance are most useful to SME exporters and how such support can best be provided to them. The quality of the support systems is found to vary widely among the four countries. Finally, a number of policy conclusions are put forward.

This title was first published in 2000: As in many other LDCs, in Indonesia small-scale industries (SSIs) are important, particularly with respect to the creation of employment opportunities. SSIs are expected to absorb many millions of workers who have been displaced by current economic crisis. This work seeks to explain the pattern of development of SSIs in Indonesia within a broader theoretical framework. It also deals with a number of SSI development-related aspects that in Indonesia so far have never or rarely been studied, such as the formation of strategic alliance, cluster development, and application of theories of flexible specialization to the LDCs. The book also tries to examine empirically the effects of the current economic crisis and to assess theoretically the likely impact of the full implementation of the agreed IMF reform package on SSI development in the country. Main problems faced by small producers and the government policy environment are highlighted through several detailed examples.
