This type of information would to a large degree fill a void in current market news information-specifically the volume of apples held by primary terminal market receivers However, due to time lags associated with inventory adjustments of secondary wholesalers and institutional outlets, these data do not reflect immediate changes in consumption. Moreover, they show wide fluctuations in movement from week to week, and are not too dependable as guides to the current strength or weakness in market demand. Supplemental information was obtained from apple shippers in major commercial producing areas and buyers in the Philadelphia market concerning factors they considered in making marketing decisions and the information used to evaluate the factors considered.
