VI spectrum of potential applications is outlined by T. W. HANSCH, who also touches briefly on the exciting field of laser spectroscopy, a most important application to which a forthcoming volume is devoted. The treatment, being tutorial in nature, is suitable both for graduate students and for scientists working in the dye-laser field or applying a dye laser in another research discipline. The book will also prove to be an indispensable and handy source of information for the specialist. The literature is reviewed up to spring 1973, and the list of additional references (which cites the titles of articles) extends to summer 1973. This is proof of an amazingly short publication period for a 300-page book. Heidelberg, October 1973 HELMUT K. V. LOTSCH Contents 1. Principles of Dye Laser Operation. By FRITZ P. The Handbook of Biomedical Nonlinear Optical Microscopy provides comprehensive treatment of the theories, techniques, and biomedical applications of nonlinear optics and microscopy for cell biologists, life scientists, biomedical engineers, and clinicians. The chapters are separated into basic and advanced sections, and provide both textual and graphical illustrations of all key concepts. The more basic sections are aimed at life scientists without advanced training in physics and mathematics, and tutorials are provided for the more challenging sections. The first part of the Handbook introduces the historical context of nonlinear microscopy. The second part presents the nonlinear optical theory of two- and multiphoton excited fluorescence (TPE, MPE) spectroscopy, second and third harmonic generation (SHG, THG) spectroscopy, and coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS). The third part introduces modern microscopic and spectroscopic instrumentation and techniques that are based on nonlinear optics. The fourth part provides key applications of nonlinear microscopy to the biomedical area: neurobiology, immunology, tumor biology, developmental biology, dermatology, and cellular metabolism. There are also chapters on nonlinear molecular probes, cellular damage, and nanoprocessing.

The field of nonlinear optics, which has undergone a very rapid development since the discovery of lasers in the early sixties, continues to be an active and rapidly developing - search area. The interest is mainly due to the potential applications of nonlinear optics: - rectly in telecommunications for high rate data transmission, image processing and recognition or indirectly from the possibility of obtaining large wavelength range tuneable lasers for applications in industry, medicine, biology, data storage and retrieval, etc. New phenomena and materials continue to appear regularly, renewing the field. This has proven to be especially true over the last five years. New materials such as organics have been developed with very large second- and third-order nonlinear optical responses. Imp- tant developments in the areas of photorefractivity, all optical phenomena, frequency conv- sion and electro-optics have been observed. In parallel, a number of new phenomena have been reported, some of them challenging the previously held concepts. For example, solitons based on second-order nonlinearities have been observed in photorefractive materials and frequency doubling crystals, destroying the perception that third order nonlinearities are - quired for their generation and propagation. New ways of creating and manipulating nonl- ear optical materials have been developed. An example is the creation of highly nonlinear (second-order active) polymers by static electric field, photo-assisted or all-optical poling. Nonlinear optics involves, by definition, the product of electromagnetic fields. As a con- quence, it leads to the beam control.

This is the seventh set of Handbook of Porphyrin Science.Porphyrins, phthalocyanines and their numerous analogue and derivatives are materials of tremendous importance in chemistry, materials science, physics, biology and medicine. They are the red color in blood (heme) and the green in leaves (chlorophyll); they are also excellent ligands that can coordinate with almost every metal in the Periodic Table. Grounded in natural systems, porphyrins are incredibly versatile and can be modified in many ways; each new modification yields derivatives, demonstrating new chemistry, physics and biology, with a vast array of medicinal and technical applications. As porphyrins are currently employed as platforms for study of theoretical principles and applications in a wide variety of fields, the Handbook of Porphyrin Science represents a timely ongoing series dealing in detail with the synthesis, chemistry, physicochemical and medical properties and applications of polypyrrole macrocycles. Professors Karl Kadish, Kevin Smith and Roger Guilard are internationally recognized experts in the research field of porphyrins, each having his own separate area of expertise in the field. Between them, they have published over 1500 peer-reviewed papers and edited more than three dozen books on diverse topics of porphyrins and phthalocyanines. In assembling the new volumes of this unique handbook, they have selected and attracted the very best scientists in each sub-discipline as contributing authors. This handbook will prove to be a modern authoritative treatise on the subject as it is a collection of up-to-date works by world-renowned experts in the field.
