This companion volume to Lee's Synopsis of Anaesthesia has been developed to enable the reader to check how much of the factual information from the Synopsis has been retained. This does not, of course, cover the whole area of anaesthesia contained in the Synopsis, which includes much about the art of the subject, and the wisdom of many years of experience, both of which are difficult to test. Nevertheless, the area of anaesthesia rests firmly on a database of scientific knowledge. Such background knowledge is most easily tested by the MCQ format, presented here. The questions have been carefully formatted in a friendly way, to help develop the reader's knowledge of the subject, and are therefore slightly different from 'exam' questions. They are designed to augment what you have gleaned from the Synopsis, rather than to test in a destructive or competitive sense. This little book is unashamedly dedicated to improving the quality of anaesthesia. It is also dedicated to helping students of anaesthesia pass exams, which has been the long-term aim of the Synopsis itself! On each question, there is the briefest reference to the page of the Synopsis to which the question refers. After each question, a brief explanation of the reason for a statement being false is frequently included. The answers on the right-hand side of the page may be covered up by a card or ruler, while the statement is assessed, and then checked against the reader's views.

In recent years our understanding of molecular mechanisms of drug action and interindividual variability in drug response has grown enormously. Meanwhile, the practice of anesthesiology has expanded to the preoperative environment and numerous locations outside the OR. Anesthetic Pharmacology: Basic Principles and Clinical Practice, 2nd edition, is an outstanding therapeutic resource in anesthesia and critical care: Section 1 introduces the principles of drug action, Section 2 presents the molecular, cellular and integrated physiology of the target organ/functional system and Section 3 reviews the pharmacology and toxicology of anesthetic drugs. The new Section 4, Therapeutics of Clinical Practice, provides integrated and comparative pharmacology and the practical application of drugs in daily clinical practice. Edited by three highly acclaimed academic anesthetic pharmacologists, with contributions from an international team of experts, and illustrated in full colour, this is a sophisticated, user-friendly resource for all practitioners providing care in the perioperative period.
