DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe 1988 Fisheries Bioengineering Symposium, held in Portland, Oregon, USA, was based on a theme of "Problems and Solutions in Developed River Systems." The emphasis was upon developed river systems both because development is more the norm than nondevelopment and because the seemingly worst problems-hence, the biggest challenges-for fish in rivers result from development. Further, one can reasonably predict that development will continue, so unless adequate solutions are found, river-based fisheries will experience progressiverly greater problems. Most of the symposium was deveoted to solutions in two main and widely divergent topics: habitat improvement and restoration, and mitigration via hatcheries. Although these topics may seem strange bedfewllows, they define the main alternatives available to fishery managers for correcting or mitigating fishery losses in developed rivers, and they are the professional concerns of bioengineering. In this regard, it was a primary goal of the sterring committee to bring together and facilitate information exchange between biologist and engineers so that each group could gain a better appreciation for the other's perspectives, constraints, and strengths.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe main objectives of LARS were 1) To produce reliable estimates of fish yield by: a) reviewing existing estimators of production and standing stocks in large rivers and b) summarizing current river inventory and assessment techniques for biotic and abiotic variables; 2) To publish the case studies and synthesis papers; 3) To identify areas requiring further study to improve river resource management; and 4) To improve communication and liaison between scientists in research and management, university and government.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKAquatic plants continue to create problems associated with navigation, flood control, agriculture, irrigation and drainage, values of lands, conservation of wildlife and fisheries, and water resource supply. While much research is being done to find more effective and economic control measures, there is now a great need to apply known facts to achieve a measure of control by the means available. It is the purpose of this volume to provide a scientifically documented treatise of the known facts as they apply to the control of aquatic weeds in river basins and their allied waterways with particular emphasis on alligator weed and water hyacinth.
