Excerpt from Manual Training Magazine, 1899-1900, Vol. 1 I see now, better than I did then, that I was really getting the lion's share of the profit. I had a kind of pleasure in doing such things for my pupils, and there was a further incentive in the evident pleasure of my pupils in seeing what I did. I did not know it at the time, but as I look back I realize that I must have worked in a spirit more selfish than altruistic. I prized the exhilaration in self that comes from showing novel things to others rather more than the exhilaration in others that comes from finding things out for themselves. At any rate, 1 did not so much ask my pupils to Observe for themselves as I sought to have them see what I saw, and hear what I had to say. 1 was the active one; they were the passive. Had any one said to me at this time, Now what you are doing yourself for your pupils is just what thev ought to be doing themselves, I might have assented to the suggestion as ideally a good one, but I certainly would have scouted it as impracticable. The schoolhouse where I taught was not adapted to such work; the com mittee had no money for it; the public would not stand the expense of it; pupils would cut, burn and poison themselves in doing it; parents. Could not see the sense of it, and would not tolerate the thought of it; I had no time to give to it it was all I could do to keep my head above water with my own humble undertakings. I presume, however, it was. Not the result Of any conscious decision on my part that I did not, as a matter Of fact, stir up a hornet's nest of protests in the matter, but sim ply held my peace and kept on doing experiments in a desultory way, as I had begun.r 899] the MA nual tra [ni/vg [dea 3. Excerpt from Manual Training Magazine, 1905, Vol. 6 The introduction of any particular industry into the field of element ary education, or to be more exact, the introduction of any particular form of hand-work, can be justified, if it can be shown that the mental and physical activities essential for the proper performance of the work so introduced are such activities as are needed by the child at the time when they appear for the proper unfolding of his powers, and that no other form of work can be given at that time which will better meet the needs of the child. No kind of work, industrial or otherwise, can be justified because it has utility and training value if there can be substituted for it within the same period another kind of work which has a higher utility and train ing value. The great problem in industrial education today is to determine what activities of the child need development and what lines of hand-work are best adapted to meet this need; and this will demand an examination of each particular phase of hand-work with reference to the varieties of mental activity involved in its performance and the relative prominence of each variety, and a similar consideration of the physical activities in volved. It will demand further, such a knowledge of the child's present capabilities and needs as will enable the proper authorities to adapt the work at any given stage to these capabilities and needs. Excerpt from Manual Training Magazine, 1910, Vol. 11 During the next eleven days and the last five days before sailing for home I spent my time in London and places within easy reach by train. My chief aim during this time was to become acquainted with the manual training work in both the elementary and higher elementary schools, and as a secondary aim, to get acquainted with the work Of a few typical industrial schools and schools Of arts and crafts. Of course I spent some time in the museums, at St Paul's Cathedral and West minster Abbey, but I did not attempt to see the sights of London in the conventional way. It was more in harmony with my purpose to visit schools in Operation and talk with the men who are influencing English education and the teachers who are meeting the every-day problems of the shop and classroom. I shall never forget a morning call on Alfred Mosely. He was very busy, but not too busy to welcome another American teacher. I shall always remember his cordial greeting and his questions concerning Bradley Polytechnic Institute and its work. My brief interview with him was another proof of his deep interest in American schools, and recalled the origin of the Mosely commissions as told by Mr. Mosely himself. In his preface to the report Of the 1903 commission he says' The story of the origin of the Industrial and Educational Commissions to the United States takes me back to South Africa some fifteen years ago. I had for many years been engaged in mining Operations at Kimberley, which, in common with the work Of the great bulk of the diamond diggers, had proved unremunerative, when Gardner Williams, the California engineer, arrived in South Africa, and took over the management of the De Beers Company, which the late Cecil Rhodes was just then amalgamating. Gardner Williams in turn imported the late Louis Seymour. TO the latter, by the way, the British nation owes a debt of gratitude for his engineering work in Natal in the early stages of the recent Boer war. By repairing bridges as fast as they were destroyed by the enemy, and so keeping open the lines Of communication without which Operations in Natal would have been impossible, he and his volunteer company did yeoman service; and ultimately he lost his life whilst leading some of his men to cover in the defence of a bridge at Zand River. Gardner Williams and Louis Seymour were followed by many other American engineers, in cluding Perkins, Jennings, and Hammond, the last two, it is interesting to note.
