Excerpt from Manual Arts for Vocational Ends If one is to receive a profitable return from a wage earning occupation he must prepare particularly to do what is required of those engaged in the occupation. A vocational tendency, therefore, must obtain somewhere in the process of education. Inasmuch as the large majority of those at any time enrolled in the public schools must find a means of livelihood early in life, it is imperative that the public schools, even in the lower grades, offer an opportunity for vocational work. It is because of this necessity, and because America is so largely industrial that industrial education has recently become prominent as a subject not only for discussion in educational circles but for action in legislative bodies. Believing that the manual arts should and may have a prominent place in that branch of vocational education known as industrial education, the author has urged upon his auditors in classroom and lecture room the need of a reorganization and an extension of the manual arts to meet the needs of the newer education. If by means of publication his appeal can be made to a larger number of maple, this book will serve its purpose. Excerpt from Manual Arts Public School Manual Arts an Agency, for Vocational Education However this may be, one feature of either of the two plans sug gested should be emphasized as imperative, viz: Put the-special work followed by the pupil in his senior year under the supervision. Of the leaders in the industry represented. I do not believe we shall ever get industrial conditions to obtain in the school if school men are permitted to organize the work of industrial courses, nu less they have had the special industrial training needed. On the other hand, I maintain that the executive heads in the school sys tem must remain in general control. Germany and England give us our best illustration of what can be done in this direction - by demonstrating the sanest kind of cooperation between the school and the industrial leaders. . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
