Making their mark on Tinseltown's movers and shakers is the plan for these savvy businesswomen, but mansions, movie stars, and temptation wait around every corner. You'll love this trilogy of sun-kissed romances featuring three spirited friends and the men lucky enough to win their hearts: Heart of Design: The tabloids portray flirtatious Ian O'Connor as Hollywood's latest playboy, but Sophie Hartland is just there to renovate his bedroom, not become another notch on his bedpost. But Ian finds her a refreshing change from the actress wannabes trying to hop aboard his new gravy train of success. Can Sophie ignore her traitorous libido - and, more important, can she protect her heart in this game of wills? Planning for Love: It's time event planner Poppy Reagan took her dating life as seriously as she does her business. She swears off the bad boys and strategically maps out a plan to find an honest, attractive man to become her life partner. Too bad the sexy Ohio dermatologist wooing her doesn't meet her criteria . . . until her heart overrules her head. Art of Affection: Holly Hartland has spent the last year in Los Angeles finalizing her divorce and getting her career as an art gallery curator back on track. The platonic co-parenting role she shares with LAPD detective Gary Sumner is perfect for two people who've sworn off romance, but the burgeoning sexual chemistry they share proves hard to ignore. Downtown department stores were once the heart and soul of America's pulsing Broadways and Main Streets. With names such as City of Paris, Penn Traffic, The Maze, Maison Blanche, or The Popular, they suggested spheres far beyond mundane shopping. Nicknames reflected the affection customers felt for their favorites, whether Woodie's, Wanny's, Stek's, O.T.'s, Herp's, or Bam's. The history of downtown department stores is as fascinating as their names and as diverse as their merchandise. Their stories encompass many themes: the rise of decorative design, new career paths for women, the growth of consumerism, and the technological ingenuity of escalators and pneumatic tubes. Just as the big stores made up their own small universes, their stories are microcosmic narratives of American culture and society. The big stores were much more than mere businesses. They were local institutions where shoppers could listen to concerts, see fashion shows and art exhibits, learn golf or bridge, pay electric bills, and plan vacations – all while their children played in the store's nursery under the eye of a uniformed nursemaid. From Boston to San Diego and Miami to Seattle, department stores symbolized a city's spirit, wealth, and progressiveness. Situated at busy intersections, they occupied the largest and finest downtown buildings, and their massive corner clocks became popular meeting places. Their locations became the epicenters of commerce, the high point from which downtown property taxes were calculated. Spanning the late 19th century well into the 20th, their peak development mirrors the growth of cities and of industrial America when both were robust and flourishing. The time may be gone when children accompany their mothers downtown for a day of shopping and lunch in the tea room, when monogrammed trucks deliver purchases for free the very same day, and when the personality of a city or town can be read in its big stores. But they are far from forgotten and they still have power to influence how we shop today. Service and Style recreates the days of downtown department stores in their prime, from the 1890s through the 1960s. Exploring in detail the wide range of merchandise they sold, particularly style goods such as clothing and home furnishings, it examines how they displayed, promoted, and sometimes produced goods. It reveals how the stores grew, why they declined, and how they responded to and shaped the society around them.

Peggy Knickerbocker, a native San Franciscan, and daughter of a drama critic and a political activist, had a long and charmed career in the world of food. She taught cooking, ran a catering business in the 1970’s and co-owned, with her childhood friend, Flicka McGurrin, two colorful restaurants, one still thrives on the waterfront with McGurrin as sole owner. In 1989 she left the business to write about food. At first she wrote steadily for magazines such as Saveur, Food and Wine and Gourmet and then went on to write four cookboo ks, the last won a James Beard Award. She’d eaten her way through every continent by the time she was done writing about food. Along the way, Knickerbocker had the greatest friends and a fascinating life, including years in Paris. She’d wrestled most of her demons to the mat, but with men, she’d faltered. After an early divorce and one or two good relationships, she repeatedly under-served herself with her choices. Late in middle age, Peggy realized that she was quite satisfied with her life. That was when the man appeared. She’d never considered a businessman, let alone one originally from the Midwest. Since Knickerbocker had come of age in San Francisco’s Bohemian North Beach during 70’s, she’d gone for unconventional and often unavailable men. Robert Fisher, a widower, a man with innumerable attractions, pursued her hotly. She clung to her independence only to realize she could have it all. She discovered the man with whom she’d spend her life, and, along the way, the subject of this book.

Now his brother's wedding back in Beauford Bend offers the perfect hideout. Neyland MacKenzie has a passion for jewelry making and a hatred for football. Neither is working out very well. With sales down, it's getting harder to pay the rent or buy new materials, and she can't escape the notoriety of being the daughter of the beloved Beauford high school coach. Still, when Gabe walks into her shop looking like a cross between a GQ model and a Viking warrior and picks out the most expensive piece in her case, Neyland refuses to sell to him. Everybody knows he sends women jewelry as kiss-off gifts, and her art will not be part of that, even if Gabe does have the bluest eyes in Tennessee. Gabe has never been one to walk away from a challenge, especially when he needs a distraction - and most especially when that challenge has legs that would stop a locomotive. But if Neyland tackles his heart, could it cost him another ring? Sensuality Level: Sensual
