"This report contains a biological assessment of specific areas that may be considered for designation of critical habitat for the threatened Northwest Atlantic Ocean and the endangered North Pacific Ocean Distinct Population Segments (DPSs) of the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). The designation of critical habitat was prompted by a 2011 final rule revising the listing of loggerhead sea turtles under the ESA from a single worldwide listing of the species as threatened to nine DPSs, listed as either threatened or endangered. The two DPSs that are the subject of this biological report - the Northwest Atlantic Ocean and North Pacific Ocean - are the only DPSs of loggerheads that occur within U.S. jurisdiction. Although American Samoa, an unincorporated territory of the United States, is located within the general geographical area associated with the South Pacific Ocean DPS, loggerheads are not known to occur there"--Executive summary.

The Law Library presents the complete text of the Endangered and Threatened Species - Northwest Atlantic Ocean Loggerhead Sea Turtle and North Pacific Ocean Loggerhead Distinct Population Segments (US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Regulation) (NOAA) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 We, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), issue a final rule to designate critical habitat for the Northwest Atlantic Ocean Distinct Population Segment (DPS) of the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) within the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico pursuant to the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended (ESA). Specific areas for designation include 38 occupied marine areas within the range of the Northwest Atlantic Ocean DPS. These areas contain one or a combination of habitat types: Nearshore reproductive habitat, winter area, breeding areas, constricted migratory corridors, and/or Sargassum habitat. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is issuing a final rule for loggerhead critical habitat for terrestrial areas (nesting beaches) in a separate document. No marine areas meeting the definition of critical habitat were identified within the jurisdiction of the United States for the North Pacific Ocean DPS, and therefore we are not designating critical habitat for that DPS. This ebook contains: - The complete text of the Endangered and Threatened Species - Northwest Atlantic Ocean Loggerhead Sea Turtle and North Pacific Ocean Loggerhead Distinct Population Segments (US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Regulation) (NOAA) (2018 Edition) - A dynamic table of content linking to each section - A table of contents in introduction presenting a general overview of the structure
