DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book offers a ground-breaking exploration of the aesthetics of poetic freedom. The range is broad, from antiquity to the present and from Europe and the Middle East into the poetry of the English-speaking world. Revealing questions about the elusiveness of poetic freedom—what does the term actually mean?—are repeatedly tested against the accomplishments of major poets such as Whitman, Dickinson, Rilke, Dante and Virgil, and their public yet intensely private originality. The result is a fresh, and well-nigh revolutionary, way of seeing literary and modern history, or an initiation into the more striking gift of aesthetic freedom.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKFreedom's Plow is the first volume designed to provide teachers and teachers-in-training with the practical resources they need to make their teaching practice and classrooms more multicultural. Parts II and III present the voices and experiences of teachers from first grade to college level who are actually engaged in multicultural teaching efforts. The contributors examine what redefining their practice as multicultural has meant for their work in terms of content, pedagogy, power and indeed their own attitudes and values. The volume concludes by focusing on the power arrangements, perspectives and personnel policies needed if schools are to emerge as truly multicultural, multiethnic democracies.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKIn this book, Binder shows that at the heart of the most prominent arguments in favour of value-neutral approaches to overall freedom lies the value freedom has for human agency and development. Far from leading to the adoption of a value-neutral approach, however, ascribing importance to freedom’s agency value requires one to adopt a refined value-based approach. Binder employs an axiomatic framework in order to develop such an approach. She shows that a focus on freedom’s agency value has far reaching consequences for existing results in the freedom ranking literature: it requires one to move beyond a person’s given all-things-considered preferences to the values underlying a person’s preference formation. Furthermore, it requires, as Binder argues, one to account (only) for those differences between choice options which really matter to people. Binder illustrates the implications of her analysis for the evaluation of public policy and human development with the capability approach: only if sufficient importance is ascribed to freedom’s agency value can the capability approach keep its promises.
