Louisianan Frank Grima is only ten when he has his first encounter with a white policeman. Shocked at the anger the officer displays simply because Frank is of another color, he runs home to his mama, who makes him faithfully promise that he will always obey the law. Eleven years later, Frank joins the Acadian City police force-young, naïve, and hungry for knowledge. It is August 28, 1970, and Frank knows he has no choice but to strive for excellence. His life depends on it. Vietnam veteran Peter Hillman is hired the same day as Frank. Although he has good intentions of rendering justice and making a difference in his community, Peter carries psychological baggage that has the potential to greatly impact his career. As the two recruits begin protecting and serving, they soon learn that racism, anger, and cynicism are prevalent among the ranks. Even though Frank shuns the drama, controversy, and endless dilemmas that surround the force, being a black cop in the Deep South is more challenging than he ever imagined. In this compelling tale based on true events, police officers labor to render good-and sometimes appalling wrongs-onto the citizens of Acadian, and eventually discover that there will always be lost lions behind the badges.

The first novel in the Alix of Wanthwaite series, by bestselling author Pamela Kaufman. Eleven-year-old Alix is the daughter of the baron of Wanthwaite, whose lands along the Scottish border are among the best in England. But when her family is killed and her lands seized, Alix is forced to flee from the only home she’s ever known. Her one hope of restoring her inheritance is to plead her case to King Richard the Lion Heart, who is far away in France, preparing to go on his Crusade. Alix resolves to follow him. She cuts her hair, dresses as a boy, and takes the road south to London. Disguised as a beautiful young boy, Alix is more than befriended by the handsome and mysterious King Richard, even becoming his favorite page. Their relationship sets tongues wagging and places Alix in considerable danger as the battle for Jerusalem unfolds. “Richly rewarding, superbly written... The richness of the characters, the historical details, and the story as a whole make this novel a memorable reading experience.”—Chicago Sun-Times

In the corner of Joanne Farrell's living room sits a box once owned by her grandfather, Dr. John A. Farrell. The contents of the old wooden box aided her in her search for the secrets of people long past. Each item in the wooden time capsule gave her life new meaning and purpose while courageously she wrote her first novel. She found pride and a deep understanding of life while learning and writing about the challenges faced by those who lived long ago. It is a novel to pay tribute to the grandfather she never knew. Now, she would like to share her novel of generations of Irish heritage with the world. It is the story of the Irish coming to America through exile, famine, and chain letters of hope. Once the Irish came to America, they shared their dreams and gifts with the new nation as well as the burdens of many American hardships. Each soul in each generation gave it all, suffered great, and found the will to survive when all odds were against them and every obstacle was put in their path. Their lives changes America forever. A deeply spiritual Christian, Farrell is a strong advocate for humane policies and is active in many grassroots organizations and causes. She is an avid songwriter, poet, guitarist, painter, hiker, traveler, and mother of three. At the present, she resides in the City of Rensselaer, N.Y. on the very same street as her great grandparents did a century ago.

1175. Christmas Day. Abergavenny Castle in Monmouthshire, Wales. William de Braose, Baron of Abergavenny, invited all Chieftains of the Welsh to feast with him at Christmas. Normans then locked the castle gates and slaughtered their guests where they stood. Knights thundered out of the castle, crossed the valleys, and murdered defenseless wives and children in their homes. Word quickly spread of the treachery. A few blamed the Sheriff of Herefordshire, some the Baron of Abergavenny; and still others, King Henry II of England. It was inevitable that, sooner or later, word would reach their sons and brothers fighting in the Second Crusade. Equally inevitable was the firestorm of retribution that swept down from the mountains to engulf the castle walls. Abergavennys baptism in blood had only just begun. . Britains Newfound Prince Of Exposition At long last, a novelist has arrived with the wit and aptitude to justly claim the throne of allegory left vacant for so long. Windsor, Berkshire, England Once or twice within ones lifetime an author comes along who actually manages to unfurl and advance the banner of genuine Literature: to reclaim the soul of Britain in the name of something far grander than simple prose. St. Ives, Cambridgeshire W. B. Bakers latest novel, The Lion and The Falcon, may quite simply be the finest compilation of poetry and prose that Britain has witnessed in the past half century. Kensington Road, London Not shoddy sentimentality but honest sentiment, this account set during the Second Crusade tells the heroic tale of men and women who may, through the savagery of conflict, abandon religion but never their faith: who might mislay their cause but, by no means, their conscience. Abergavenny, Monmouthshire Resplendent evidence that the glory of the British Empire continues to beat within our collective breast: a testament to the unrivalled majesty of the English language the world has, sadly, witnessed all too infrequently of late. Covent Garden, Westminster A Magnificent Re-emergence of English Literature For the 21st Century W. B. Baker has done more through his writing to promote Wales around the world than anyone in recent memory. Stunning imagery and the ability to convey the warmth of Welsh culture combine with historical accuracy to bring Wales its finest champion since Dylan Thomas. BBC Hall of Fame Southwest Wales The British People at Their Finest and Most Magnificent Shamelessly brutal in his examination of the human heart, W. B. Baker presents Britain a stunning masterpiece of fiction. The Ravenous is Bakers tour de force; the author using his considerable command of the English language to weave a majestic tale of valour and faith. Tottenham Court Road London, England A disturbing indictment of human frailty ... An even more glorius assertion of mans innate nobility Couched inconspicuously within this modern epic of Wales lie affirmations of the true majesty of humankind Within this moving tale, valiant men and women emerge from the mire of war to exemplify the inextinguishable courage of this nation we call home. The tenth edition of Gold Coins of the World expands on its predecessor, digging more deeply into new areas of collector interest, and expanding many sections. From the coins of Ancient Greece, Rome, and the Byzantine Empire, and from Afghanistan through Zanzibar, it includes the addition of many new discoveries for dozens of countries. From the 384 pages of the 1958 edition, the work has expanded to 852 pages, which have been completely revised and updated. The authors have listed more than 22,000 coin types, which are illustrated with more than 8,500 photos—now, for the first time, each one of them in color. Each country’s section includes tables of weight and fineness. The market valuations are extensively revised to reflect both the higher price of gold as well as the skyrocketing demand for numismatic rarities. Valuations are now provided, for the first time, in up to three states of preservation. Many of the prices, especially for great rarities and coins in higher grades, have at least doubled. In fact, as collectors recognize the scarcity of coins in the highest states of preservation, the premium for such coins relative to lower-graded ones is escalating beyond traditional proportions. The coinage of India and the Islamic world, long dismissed by western collectors as difficult to decipher, unimportant, and lacking in value, is now the subject of intense interest, and has shown some of the most dramatic increases of all. The reader will also find a useful directory of the world’s leading gold-coin dealers and auction houses. For the numismatist, banker, economist, historian, or institution of higher learning, the tenth edition of Gold Coins of the World is a book for every library, public and private.

This overview of the famous and pioneering excavations of Heinrich Schliemann was first published in German in 1889, and in this extended English translation in 1891. The author, Carl Schuchhardt (1859-1943), had wide experience of excavations in both Asia Minor and Europe, and the translator, Eugénie Sellers (1860-1943), was the first female student of the British School at Athens. The book begins with a life of Schliemann, who had died in 1890, and goes on to describe his extraordinary discoveries at Troy and Mycenae, and his work at Tiryns, Ithaca and Orchomenos. It also contains two reports of later work at the mound of Hissarlik, the site of Troy, by Schliemann himself and his assistant Wilhelm Dörpfeld, which had not been included in the German edition. The book is illustrated with many line drawings, and includes the famous photograph of Sophia Schliemann wearing 'the gold of Troy'.
