Excerpt from Life's Sunny Side Is the way long Meseems not so. No way is long where friends do go In converse low, and sweet, and deep; And all the way I have with me My Lord's dear companie. Is the way hard But, surely, nay! For Lean on Me, His voice doth say And scarce I know the path grows steep, So wondrously it heartens me, My Lord's dear companie. Excerpt from Last Leaf From Sunny Side Such virtues formed in part the character of her Of whose life it is proposed here to give a simple narrative and they have laid restraint upon the effort. Her strictly private journal, in which she had recorded the details of her religious history for the last twenty years of her life, she commit ted in her last hours to the writer of these pages, in solemn trust that he should give it to the flames without inspection of its contents by any human eye. The most valuable records for the present purpose are thus removed beyond our reach. The spirit of that trust has been extended also to many fragmentary records that remained. It is neces sarily, therefore, but a broken narrative that E here Offered as a memorial of her. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Sunny Side of Life: Sermons Preached in the Every-Day Church, Boston In the preparation of the following sermons, it was no part of my plan that hey should be published in book form. They were all preached to the congregation of the Every-Day Church, Boston, in the course of my regular ministry. While they were preached without manuscript, they were usually dictated for publication the following week. Sometimes the dictation was made with reasonable care, but more frequently very rapidly and with a view only to newspaper use. Amid an unusually busy and distracting ministry, I have at the suggestion of friends undertaken to gather up a few of these sermons into a volume. Now that they are published, I am bound to acknowledge that I cannot be proud of my children. Upon nearly every page, certainly in every sermon, I am confronted with visible and humiliating signs of great haste in preparation, while revision is quite out of the question. The only merit perhaps which could ever have been claimed for these sermons was an honest purpose evident in them to call men to a higher life, and a warmth of earnestness which I can only hope has not wholly disappeared in the printing. It was not found practicable to make the arrangement with reference to any proper sequence. Indeed, the arrangement has been more with reference to variety. When I read stories of women on ranches, I wonder if I should consider myself a ranch woman at all. I lost that life when I was twenty years old. Then I realize in my heart I have never left the ranch. It is where I will always be. If you'd ever lived a cowboy life, it will forever define who you are. Those years defined who I am from my work ethic to my love of being outdoors and alone. The spirit of the west is alive and well in me. I've worked to turn every place I've ever lived into Sunnyside. By reading the stories I've written, I'm hoping my readers will feel some connection to a life I thought was so special.
