Excerpt from Life of Rev. Hosea Ballou, Vol. 1: With Accounts of His Writings, and Biographical Sketches of His Seniors and Contemporaries in the Universalist Ministry I have herein attempted to give an account of the life of our venerable teacher and guide, Rev. Hosea Ballou. Many circum stances have concurred to prompt me to this undertaking. He was my friend, my spiritual father. He was the means of bring ing me into the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ. Had it not been for the acquaintance I formed with him in my early man hood, I know not what would have been the course of my life. I always revered him for his goodness. He was not perfect, for no man is strictly so but he was one of the best men I ever knew. He was distinguished for his meekness, quietness, pity, sympathy, tenderness; he was loving, faithful, discreet, honest, pure hearted; in fine, many good qualities united in him. His life was a Christian life, in the eminent sense Of those terms; it was a useful life; and to give a faithful biography of a man, is to cause him almost to live his life over again, for the benefit Of others. It would be presumption in me to suppose that I can write a per feet biography of Father Ballou but I will add my mite to the efforts which will be made, and which ought to be made, to send down to future generations a knowledge of the man. Not only should his labors be remembered, but his precepts, doctrines and examples, also. His works will follow him.
