DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Life of Henry Winter Davis Two Border State Union men did much to save Maryland to the Nation in 1861, and their characteristics were so diverse that they tempt one to write parallel lives of them, as Plutarch did of ancient statesmen. The life of one, the great lawyer, Reverdy Johnson, for some time occupied my thought. Having completed a study of Johnson's career, I took up the life of the great orator, Henry Winter Davis, and have endeavored to write his "life, in the manner of Tacitus and Plutarch, rather than in that of the modern biographer, who tells us what we ought to know from the histories" (Saturday Review, December 13, 1913, page 750). In this study I have been much assisted by an autobiographic sketch of Mr. Davis's early years, written by him shortly before his death and placed in my hands by Miss Mary Winter Davis, his only living daughter. This sketch forms the first three chapters of the book. Much assistance has also been obtained from the volume published by Harper and Brothers in 1867 at the instance of Mrs. Davis, entitled "Speeches and Addresses Delivered in the Congress of the United States and on Several Public Occasions by Henry Winter Davis."
