The B-24 Liberator was built in greater numbers than any other US warplane, yet its combat crews live, even today, in the shadow of the less plentiful, but better-known, B-17. Accounts of the 'Mighty Eighth' in Europe, and indeed many of the books and films that emerged from the greatest air campaign in history, often overlook the B-24, even though it was in action for as long as the Flying Fortress, and participated in just as many perilous daylight bombing missions.

Although overshadowed, to a large extent, by the B-17 Flying Fortress the B-24 Liberator was made in greater quantity, and used by more Allied air forces on every front of the Second World War. The first operational models were used by the Royal Air Force as a transport on the North Atlantic ferry service. The RAF Liberator I, used both as a bomber in North Africa and as a long-range Coastal Command patroller, had ASV (air-to-surface vessel) radar and four 20mm cannons. Its armament was greatly improved when powered turrets in the tail and mid-upper positions were incorporated into the Liberator II. As a heavy bomber it saw service in the Pacific with the USAAF; in North Africa and Italy with the RAF and USAAF. Specially equipped Liberators were also used to drop agents and equipment in Occupied Europe on behalf of the OSS (Office of Strategic Service), SOE (Special Operations Executive) and SIS (Secret Intelligence Service, also known as MI6).

The untold story of the bloodiest and most dramatic march to victory of the Second World War—now a Netflix original series starring Jose Miguel Vasquez, Bryan Hibbard, and Bradley James “Exceptional . . . worthy addition to vibrant classics of small-unit history like Stephen Ambrose’s Band of Brothers.”—Wall Street Journal Written with Alex Kershaw's trademark narrative drive and vivid immediacy, The Liberator traces the remarkable battlefield journey of maverick U.S. Army officer Felix Sparks through the Allied liberation of Europe—from the first landing in Italy to the final death throes of the Third Reich. Over five hundred bloody days, Sparks and his infantry unit battled from the beaches of Sicily through the mountains of Italy and France, ultimately enduring bitter and desperate winter combat against the die-hard SS on the Fatherland's borders. Having miraculously survived the long, bloody march across Europe, Sparks was selected to lead a final charge to Bavaria, where he and his men experienced some of the most intense street fighting suffered by Americans in World War II. And when he finally arrived at the gates of Dachau, Sparks confronted scenes that robbed the mind of reason—and put his humanity to the ultimate test.

The first book in the Warbird Flightline series celebrates the Collings Foundation's Witchcraft, the last flying exemplar of the B-24 Liberator bomber. Unlike other walk-around books, Witchcraft: B-24 Liberator not only gets into the weeds of aircraft systems and stations, but also soars aloft for a bird's-eye view of the historical context in which the aircraft flew: a world on the brink of war, the desperate need for a long-range, heavy bomber, and just one American company capable of putting what became the world's most advanced aircraft into production in just nine short months. The legendary Liberator flew in every theater of the war, dropped more bombs than any other, and literally won the war in the Pacific, only to have its thunder stolen when the Boeing B-29 Superfortress was chosen to drop the atom bomb on Japan, thus ending the war and at the same time bringing the too-short lifespan of this unique and unsung hero to a close.

Above an Angry Sea chronicles USN B-24 Liberator (PB4Y-1) and PB4Y-2 Privateer operations in the Pacific. The author's previous book, We Flew Alone, discussed the Navy's use of the B-24 Liberator from February 1943 to September 1944. He now examines in dramatic detail the use of the B-24 and PB4Y-2 during the last eleven months of the war against Japan. The author has collected personal stories, over 200 photographs, a tabulation of all aerial kills credited to PB4Y patrol plane commanders, a roster of all personnel killed in action or in the line of duty, individual squadron records, and a list of all known B-24 Liberators and PB4Y-2 Privateers assigned to the Pacific between 1943 and 1945.

The 458th Bomb Group (H) entered combat with the 8th Air Force early in 1944. Based at Horsham St. Faith in England, the combat crews participated in the decisive Campaigns Big Week, Big B, D-Day and the assault on Germanys oil industry waged by the USAAF up to VE-Day. The group also tested the operational use of Azon radio-controlled bombs. The 458th flew a total of 240 missions, during which over 13,000 tons of ordnance was dropped, and was achieved at the cost of sixty-five crews MIA or involved in operational accidents. This is their complete history.
