Transnational learning has become a buzz phrase in European policy-making and in multi-national business. Learning from the experiences of others is an idea that captivates practitioners and academics alike due to its simplicity and availability in a world that is increasingly characterised by cross-border and global connections. European regions in particular offer a diverse range of solutions to often shared challenges. This provides a knowledge base for other regions to draw on, through regional success stories, publications of ‘best practice’ and EU cooperation programmes. This books explores ‘transnational learning and knowledge transfer’ in co-operation programmes and projects. It argues that a deeper understanding of learning needs to be central to the implementation of programmes and projects in order to successfully meet their desired outcomes and goals. By characterising some of the most important preconditions of transnational learning and introducing a process perspective to learning and transfer, this book identifies barriers to learning and knowledge transfer and contributes to a stronger conceptualisation of the topic. In doing so, it opens up the ‘black-box’ of transnational learning and knowledge development, providing a better understanding of its inner mechanisms. It also provides practical recommendations for policy makers and practitioners involved both at the programme and project level of transnational EU initiatives. This book will be of interest to students, researchers, and policy makers alike working in geography, political studies, legal studies and European studies.

This book examines ways in which professional and vocational education and training can contribute towards building the emerging 'knowledge society'. In particular, it explores ways in which education and training can support the generation of the 'action-oriented' and social knowledge that people require for living and working in today's world. A special focus of the book is on the distinctive role and contribution of the research and development communityin taking proactive steps to shape the form of the 'knowledge society' coming into being. The book contains a number of reflections and illustrations by those engaged in research and development work concerning the knowledge development strategies to be employed today. One of the key challenges highlighted by many of the authors is the need for researchers to adopt more 'action-oriented' approaches. This entails working closely with practitioners in 'collaborative learning networks' for the co-development of knowledge. The book sets out to elucidate the meaning of knowledge development by looking at it from three different perspectives: (1) providing illustrations of knowledge development actions in adressing 'real' problems, (2) examining how information and communication technologies (ICT) can support knowledge development and (3) analysing a number of theoretical and conceptual issues regarding knowledge development.

This edited volume reflects on how the “transnational” features in education as well as policies and practices are conceived of as mobile and connected beyond the local. Like “globalization,” the “transnational” is much more than a static reality of the modern world; it has become a mode of observation and self-reflection that informs education research, history, and policy in many world regions. This book examines the sociocultural project that the “transnational turn” evident in historical scholarship of the last few decades represents, and how a “transnational history” shapes how historians construct their objects of study. It does so from a multinational perspective, yet with a view of the different layers of historical meanings associated with the concept of the transnational.
