In 1923, a white hotel owner in rural Oklahoma took a bullet to protect his black employee. They were then killed by a mob, and newspapers from Dallas to the East Coast covered the crime. This true story sent ripples of revulsion through the region at the time but has been lost to history until now, thanks the grandson of the hotel owner, who sets down the account here.
During Dust Bowl days in west Texas, a country doctor with shaky credentials delivers a baby, a so-called "monster," acceptable parlance of that era indicating a newborn with multiple birth defects.
"After careful study of all sources for two years, the authors are of the opinion that [their Kennamer] forefathers were of High Dutch descent and lived in Holland near where that State borders with present-day Germany. ... "Hans Kennamer, with a large family, and his eldest son, Jacob, who was married, came to the Cove and settled among the Indians in 1798, or not later than 1805. This place is now know as Kennamer Cove. ... The records of Madison County, Alabama, show that Samuel, Stephen and Jacob Kennamer bought land in that county in 1809. ... It is a well-known fact that the sons of Hans Kennamer settled ... in the western part of Jackson County, the eastern part of Madison County, and the northern part of Marshall County. David and Abram resided in Madison County, while John Kennamer lived at the place wher Paint Rock, Alabama, now is. ... Hans Kennamer died and was buried in Pisgah Cemetery, in Kennamer Cove, Alabama."--Page 14-15. Nothing is know of his wife. Son Jacob Kennemer (ca. 1776-1856) " ... moved from Alabama to Giles County, Tennessee where he acquired ... land of Sugar Creek. ... He was married twice, but the names of his wives could not be ascertained. He was buried on Anderson Creek, in Lauderdale County, Alabama, near Foster's Mill."--P. 17-18. Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.
The study of childhood in academia has been dominated by a mono-cultural or WEIRD (Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic) perspective. Within the field of anthropology, however, a contrasting and more varied view is emerging. While the phenomenon of children as workers is ephemeral in WEIRD society and in the literature on child development, there is ample cross-cultural and historical evidence of children making vital contributions to the family economy. Children’s “labor” is of great interest to researchers, but widely treated as extra-cultural—an aberration that must be controlled. Work as a central component in children’s lives, development, and identity goes unappreciated. Anthropological Perspectives on Children as Helpers, Workers, Artisans, and Laborers aims to rectify that omission by surveying and synthesizing a robust corpus of material, with particular emphasis on two prominent themes: the processes involved in learning to work and the interaction between ontogeny and children’s roles as workers.

This text aims to fill a gap in the field of Middle Eastern political studies by combining international relations theory with concrete case studies. It begins with an overview of the rules and features of the Middle East regional system—the arena in which the local states, including Egypt, Turkey, Iran, Israel and the Arab states of Syria, Jordan and Iraq, operate. The book goes on to analyse foreign-policy-making in key states, illustrating how systemic determinants constrain this policy-making, and how these constraints are dealt with in distinctive ways depending on the particular domestic features of the individual states. Finally, it goes on to look at the outcomes of state policies by examining several major conflicts including the Arab-Israeli conflict and the Gulf War, and the system of regional alignment. The study assesses the impact of international penetration in the region, including the historic reasons behind the formation of the regional state system. It also analyses the continued role of external great powers, such as the United States and the former Soviet Union, and explains the process by which the region has become incorporated into the global capitalist market.
