Basok rejects the theoretical models traditionally used in development studies for analysing the non-capitalist forms of production in the capitalist economy, arguing that these theoretical models place too much emphasis on external aspects of production. Instead, she proposes that internal aspects such as technology, labour relations, and organization of production need to be examined to allow an understanding of how informal petty commodity producers survive competition with capitalist enterprises. In her research with members of small urban enterprises -- including shoemakers, bakeries, carpentry shops, street vendors, seamstresses and tailors, and market and handicraft shops -- she demonstrates that these enterprises can be viable when their production is organized in such a way that they become resistant to competition with the capitalist sector.

Heads above Water tells the stories of women and their families who survived the Grand Forks, North Dakota, flood of 1997, one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history. This book describes the challenges women faced and explores the importance of class, race, gender, sexual orientation, and disability in their disaster recovery. The women found themselves face-to-face with social and familial upheaval, emotional and physical trauma, precarious economic and social status, and feelings of loss and violation. By exploring the experiences of these women, author Alice Fothergill contributes to broader sociological discussions about women's changing roles, the stigma of needing and receiving assistance, family relationships under stress, domestic violence, downward mobility, and the importance of "home" to one's identity and sense of self. Heads above Water offers poignant insight into women's everyday lives in an extraordinary time.

This lyrical hybrid memoir revisits a lifetime's worth of personal journals to slowly piece together a narrative of chronic illness—a moving account of survival, memory, loss, and hope. Shahd Alshammari is just eighteen when she is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and told by her neurologist that she would not make it past age thirty. Despite what she is told, by thirty, she has become a professor of literature, and has managed to navigate education systems in both Kuwait and the United Kingdom and inspire generations of students. Head above Water is the painstaking, philosophical memoir of Shahd Alshammari's life of triumph and resistance, as the daughter of a Palestinian mother and Bedouin father, as a woman marked "ill" by society, and as a lifelong reader, student, and teacher. Charting her journey with raw honesty, Shahd explores disability, displacement, and belonging—not only of the body, but of culture, gender, and race, and imparts wisdom of profound philosophical value throughout. It is people, human connections, that keep us afloat, she argues—"and in storytelling we have the power to gain a sense of agency over our lives."

‘I’m not normally stuck for words, but I do know now what they mean by tongue-tied.. And when you have to contend with an encumbrance like that, what could actually be a knot in your tongue, and at the same time you’re struggling to do all you can to keep your head above water enough to attend to how you’re coming across to someone waiting so intently on what you’re next going to say that suddenly you feel you’re expected to justify you’re entire existence, it’s not exactly a simple proposition.’

A self described adult fairy tale, Head Above Water is the tale of a man named Darryl and a girl named Leena who both work at the same company but work in two different offices a thousand miles apart. A chance meeting sparks a fire in the both of them but circumstances prevent them from being together. Through the course of their lives they find it hard to remain apart and, though they are fated to be apart, they remain determined to be together. Head Above Water asks the question - how much would you sacrifice for love? What people are saying about Head Above Water: "I have to tell you, I'm an avid reader and book clubber and I have never read a book like this. There's so much detail and imagination! I can appreciate that it was a love story sprinkled with a little science fiction. I'm not really into romance novels honestly, but this book worked for me; mostly because I could relate to the characters and bits and pieces of Darryl and Leena's relationship. Who hasn't been crazy in love at least once in their life?" - Kim Bailey "I recommend this book, even if you're not a regular romance genre reader. It has something for everyone." - Julie Harris "...Wow, well, I don't really know where to begin with this review, except to say that this book is very original and it definitely surprised me in terms of how the story progressed and in terms of the almost experimental styling of the book. This is not your everyday romance novel. Yes, it contains romance and is written well; the dialogue between the characters is fluid and realistic. All the characters are believable, and one thing this author suceeds in doing where many others fail, is in reminding us that we are all human and all capable of making wrong choices and hurting others inadvertently by our actions." - Maria Savva
